M...other...? The two nestlings do not recall their hatching. But they do recall the February moon, shining high above them, and the huff huff huff of a wolf. They bump against eachother and mewl as they hang from the wolf's mouth by their scruffs, but their calls go unheard. The sun crests the horizon and bathes the landscape in sharp, warm colors just as the wolf pauses. They let out little shrieks as the wolf drops them unceremoniously onto the ground. The snow is cold and wet, and the freezing temperature soaks into their bones within seconds. The hatchlings look up, to see the maw of a great black wolf looking down upon them. The teeth of the wolf are as long as either hatchling's body, and though they know very little about the world, both hatchlings can sense malice within the wolf. "There is no escape." Growling echoes over the silent landscape as the wolf speaks to them. "Give up." But the two hatchlings have one shared trait, their bravery, and they refuse to accept that the tiny chapter of life is all they will live. The oldest hatchling bares his teeth and flaps his wings, showcasing his vitality. The youngest hatchling stands its ground and growls loudly, showcasing his courage. The wolf chuckles at the show, and prepares to snap them both up. Whistling. The twang of a bow's string snaps and an arrow whistles through the air, sinking deep into the black wolf's pelt. The wolf howls and turns to face its new foe, and the twins take the chance to run away. The cold landscape is inhospitable to then, but preferable from the wolf. It's a miracle both twins survived, as even the wolf thought it would be impossible for newly hatched whelps to endure the Southern Icefield's harsh winter.
