While it is debatable whether the author was really mad or not, all dragons acknowledge that the book leaves a massive trail of insanity in its wake. The Necronomicon describes forgotten histories, dangerous artifacts, atrocious monsters, terrible rites, and Outer Gods... Curious readers find themselves mentally warped as their perception of "reality" shifts: dragonkind is very small, stupid, and powerless compared to the other forces of the universe. Any dragon smart enough to understand the incantations is smart enough never to use them, for survival during these events depends entirely on luck.

Officially, only five copies of the Necronomicon exist in Sorienth's present, and they are almost impossible to gain access to. However, a persistent seeker will likely find an "illegal" edition, which ranges from quoted snippets, poor translations, or even entire tomes that somehow passed notice. Shrewd owners have been known to protect their copy by disguising it as another book entirely, although this runs the risk of accidental discovery by any book-loving clan members.
