The High Sorceress of Avaris, Virgo’s magic reigns within the many Halls—indeed, some whisper that it reigns even across the lands.

As High Sorceress, she presides over all arcane arts, including teaching those who show particular promise—though fools beware, she does not suffer them.

Fondness and fire both enter her voice when she speaks of Nyx—her mate, her best friend, and her fiercest competition. A genius sorceress in her own right, Virgo’s fellow student, both apprenticed to the previous Head Sorcerer. A dragon just as smart, just as talented, but who favored the unexplored and unexplained.

For years, the two competed to gain their master’s favor. To Virgo’s fury, Nyx was forever favored—pushing the realms of what was possible and what was safe, and inexplicably being praised for it. What began as a rivalry became an animosity, well-known and vicious, escalating with year upon year.

Their destiny came to a head in the Selection—the event to decide the future Head Sorceress—when the Rite of Arcane Succession became too much. Digging too deep into the darkness, Nyx’s magic grew powerful enough to snap its own bonds, becoming untethered. In the ensuing rift in reality, something ancient, dark and hungry began to consume her. A Demon, or something alike it, grew within as the horns sprouted from her head and her teeth grew sharp.

The Clan watched on, horrified and awed, but helpless—barred by the magical barrier enacted by the Rite. “None can interfere,” the previous High Sorcerer had proclaimed, watching his student with a grave eye. “This battle must decide itself.”

And to the shock of many, the battle did decide itself, but not in the way anybody expected. With the demonic creature staring back at her, Virgo found herself shaken—a decade of resentment flooding away in horror.
