Wonderful art by @Eskoniss, I love it so much!!!
A minor goddess of knowledge, Liyairca had always taken pride in the title. It hadn’t come for free- or cheap for that matter. She had dedicated a large part of her life to attaining this knowledge, whether it was studying plant life or teaching herself the many numerous languages of the world. But at a point it had become clear that she was.. Lost. Not in a sense where she didn’t know where she was but in the way that she had nowhere to return to. No place to call home.
She already knew she didn’t want to be part of a larger dragon clan. Lest they exploit her for her superior knowledge of tactics and combat. She also prefered being alone to think and be left to her own devices. She would need to find a home where no dragon clan resided but also somewhere dragons would want to avoid.
And that was how Liyairca came to settle near the seaside next to a small port named Pentonas.
The solitary life suited Liyairca. She could rest all she wanted, be sure nobody would touch her hoard and avoid unnecessary drama that plagued most dragon clans. It hadn’t been her intention to set up her den so close to a human port but she soon found it to be rather pleasant when small offerings were given to her. A fish here, a few coins there. It was surprising considering the port was in such a cold place. Without the knowledge of how to survive in these frozen lands you wouldn’t last long especially if you were human, and so Liyairca found herself growing ever curious about the port and its inhabitants.
It was rare for other dragons to appear, most of them left as quickly as they arrived but at one point another dragon, eager to claim the port and its rich marine life for themself had appeared. They were unsuited for this climate and Liyairca could tell right away. The dragon had demanded a fight knowing she was there but Liyairca had remained in her comfortable den, she knew the harsh sea winds would tire the dragon out, and she was right. She could quickly deal with the weakened intruder the next day before going back to her day to day activities. Liyairca wasn’t a strong fighter but there is more than one way to be powerful.
The offerings increased after dealing with the intruder, Liyairca did not mind she enjoyed the offerings of food, in fact it suited her so much she decided to descend from her comfortable den to teach the locals of Pentonas how to better fish. She taught them how to craft better tools, how to more effectively create warm clothing and most importantly; the importance of books. Admittedly the last part was more because she enjoyed it than anything else.
One of the humans once asked Liyairca “Why are you helping us so much? Doesn’t knowledge come with a price?”
“Knowledge comes with a price is a silly phrase,” Liyairca had replied with a chortle, she gave a wise smile before adding, “I much prefer the phrase knowledge is power.”
The increase of food offered to her meant she could spend less time hunting and instead spend more time on more important things. Such as studying the world around her and asking herself philosophical questions. For truly, who could answer those questions better than herself?
Yes this life definitely suited her, Liyairca thought to herself, pleased.
