with enough salt, nearly anything can float on water.
this is what khione reminds herself as she watches the bloated whale carcass bob along the surface. it's not everyday she finds things like this - usually it's just fish bones and sea foam speckling the water. now, it's torn flesh and exposed blubber. from the lack of blood tainting the water, she can only assume that it wasn't a recent kill.
it's the evident lack of consumption that intrigues her. that, and the way the sea life won't go within a certain radius of the whale.
whales are massive. one whale alone is enough to feed a dragon for about a month, maybe even longer. so why hasn't anyone taken a bite?
curious, she decides to perform an experiment.
it isn’t hard to scoop up a fish as she flies over a reef a distance away. it wiggles in her grasp, desperately trying to free itself, but her grip is firm. she loops around with ease, her wide wings carrying her along the sea-salted breeze. when she reaches the eerie stretch of ocean, containing nothing but the dead whale, she loosens her hold and lets the fish fall from her hand. it plops back into the water with a small splash. and from a number of feet away in the air, khione watches the following events occur.
the whale comes alive.
it happens so quickly that she can barely process it. in the blink of an eye, the whale appears to live again. it rights itself in the water and lunges after the fish like a predator might pounce upon prey, all before the fish can do more than dart a few inches away. quick as lightning, it devours the creature. then… it just - stops. it continues floating along, unmoving once more except for the way its body slowly rotates from the force of the ocean current, its decaying belly exposed once more to the sky above. its as if it never even moved in the first place. |
