Biography
The universe is everything that is- all of time and space, all matter and energy. It is an ever-expanding place, as it has been since its birth 13.8 billion years ago. The cosmos began small and started to expand, until it burst into a growing mix of light and matter in an event called the big bang. From this event the first elements were born- including hydrogen and helium- but the immense heat prevented electrons from joining these elemental nuclei to form atoms. These loose electrons scattered light, so for the first 380,000 years of its existence, the universe was dark.
It took 200 million years for gas and dust to coalesce into the first stars, which were giants compared to our own Sun. In time, these came together to form the first galaxies, and eventually they were joined by the endless array of planets, moons, comets, asteroids, and other wonderful entities that make up our diverse modern universe. Even life.
The universe continues to expand and birth new stars to this day- our galaxy creates around seven each year. Over time, its expansion draws things further and further away from us. One day, in a hypothetical future, people here will look up at the stars and not know there are galaxies beyond our own, because those galaxies will be so far away that their light doesn't reach us. Be thankful that we were born in an era where we can see how truly vast the universe is, and how much potential it could possibly hold.
