The Starry Night
The Starry Night is a beautiful oil painting of a night before sunrise, in 1889, in a series of night sky paintings made during his stay in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, France. The painting depicts Vincent’s view out of his bedroom window, with large stars and vibrant swirling winds. Van Gogh wrote a letter to his brother, Theo, describing the most beautiful view of the early summer morning star. Using this description, Vincent painted The Starry Night from memory, and used his imagination for the made-up village in the painting, which did not actually exist. Van Gogh later regarded The Starry Night, now his most famous and widely known artwork, a failure. The painting was made late into his life, as Van Gogh died the following year.
