The adopted son of Dune, the formerly heartless Gaoler of the earth. Zagreus grew up without his blood family- given to a clan of weavers as a hatchling, he never knew anything but their company. He grew used to the endless travelling, looking forward to the yearly treks to the ever-shifting trading post to sell his clans wares. His claws, born for battle, not for craft, grew far more dextrous than any other Gaolers as his clan attempted to teach him how to make the trinkets they made so easily.

Then, a newcomer. Another Gaoler- he had never seen his own kind before, and clumsily followed her everywhere she went, returning every time she brushed him off. Eventually, she relented, as glad as he was to see her own kind. Part of Dune wanted to hate the child- a Gaoler who had been born to the ice, and yet felt no whispers of the Icewarden at all. Then he'd spend hours trying to bring her pretty trinkets, and her anger evaporated like mist.

But their trek brought them to the ice again. This was where Dune's stay with the clan ended. She refused to step foot into the territory that had been lost to her as a child, and refused to part Zagreus with the clan that had raised him for far longer than she had.

Zagreus began to cry.

She stayed. She could not deny Zagreus's distress any more than a mother could, and she stepped foot into the Icelands for the first time in her life. Nothing happened- she was beneath the Icewarden's notice, not being one of his own. But that night, Zagreus, still restless from the panic of the day, ran into Reclaimer's Glacier. Dune ran after him desperately, heedless of where she was going. And she began to hear whispers.

Zagreus hasn't forgiven himself for drawing the ghosts of the dead to his mothers door. But he forgave himself enough to accompany her to her old, original clan, back in Lockesol. And he found himself a father in Pyrite.
