Biography
Nishant
Darkness. It was all he could remember. Loneliness. It was all he lived. He couldn't remember how long he had been alive or what he had done before he did what he was currently doing, but nothing seemed important anymore. He spent much of his time wandering, much of his time helping those who were lost, though they would neither see him, nor remember his help. He lived in the space between waking and dreaming and was forgotten as soon as eyes opened. There was a time, he supposed, where he had enjoyed what he did. Where he had collected gold bangles to adorn himself, and cared for the tiny lanterns that hung from his enormous wings, lighting the way. There was a time when he enjoyed living. Or at least, this was what he supposed. |
The first day he considered significant in a long while was a day he found a lost human girl in the woods. It was very early in the morning - barely a new day, and the darkest time. Her cries drew him toward her tiny form. No amount of coercing with his jingling bangles or floating lanterns would get her to calm down. In a very unlike himself moment, he scooped the young child up in one of his wings and carried her out of the forest. It was only when he reached the edge that he realized she had stopped crying and was staring up at him intently. When he stopped moving, she looked around and let out a cry of joy, pointing toward a log cabin not far off. She hugged his downy wing, bounced down to the ground, and ran off, never looking back. The following night, Nishant went back to his task, but his thoughts drifted to the little girl. After some time had passed, he began wandering to the edge of the woods to look out toward the log cabin. The event turned into a habit, and so he watched her grow and learn from the sidelines. Soon she was grown and left home. Shortly after, the cabin fell into disrepair. Several years later, he finally approached the log cabin and laying on the porch, he found a well-worn, hand-sewn doll in his likeness. |

Time passed in the human world and one day, a grown woman came to the log cabin with young children. She saw the doll and picked it up, hugging it to her chest. She looked toward the woods and Nishant watched the woman give the doll to one of the children, a young girl, and then enter the log cabin. Nishant found himself hastening through his duties and spending much of his free time just out of sight, watching as the woman and her children went about their life. Over time they planted a garden, then bought animals. Each year the garden got bigger and the animals increased. One night Nishant saw her sitting outside in a rocking chair. She was very old and he decided to finally approach her. She immediately turned toward him and a smile spread across her face. She reached for him and he settled on the ground beside the porch. She spoke to him of her life and her memory of the woods that night, and of the young family she had raised on her own. |
At some point in the night the woman passed away and once more, Nishant lost track of time.
After a particularly dark night, Nishant was surprised to hear singing. He wandered through the woods, but by the time he made his way out, the singing had stopped. This continued for several mornings. Finally, with a heavy heart, he travelled the once-familiar path to the log cabin he used to frequent and what he saw shocked him. It wasn't the modernizations to the farm and the old log cabin, but the feathered autumn-colored Dragon who was dancing through the fields. Then she began singing. Her voice and song brought tears to his eyes and all too soon, she took wing and was gone. She filled his thoughts that day and he returned to the farm each morning to hear her sing. He found himself humming while he wandered the dark woods at night and he couldn't stop smiling. He began noticing things she lingered by - whether it be a particular flower, or a berry bush, and started leaving a small bundle for her the following morning. Sometimes he cut it too close and was almost seen, but it was worth it to see her face light up with each package. Nishant found her cheerfulness carried him through even the darkest nights and seeing her every dawn was his favorite part of the day. He realized that he had fallen in love with her and wanted to let her know. |

The night before he planned to meet her Nishant didn't find any lost beings, leaving him alone with just his thoughts. He headed toward the farm much earlier and paced the grounds, wondering if this was even a good idea. Would she be upset he had seen her singing and dancing? Would she return his affections? Before he had much time to dwell, he heard wing beats and turned to watch her land. She greeted him curiously, tilting her head. Nishant opened his mouth, but found no words came out. Angrily, he looked down, trying to compose himself and when he looked up she was waiting patiently, a smile on her face. |
