As a young man, Zhou Zishu was close friends with Jing Beiyuan, Wu Xi, and Prince Helian Yi. Helian Yi was able to ascend to the throne largely in part because of the scheming and machinations of Jing Beiyuan and Zhou Zishu. In fact, Zhou Zishu created Tianchaung (Window of Heaven) with the sole purpose of placing Helian Yi on the throne and thwarting the plans of his brothers.

As master of stealth and disguises to the point of being considered a ghost, Zhou Zishu is the one to do the dark and inhumane deeds that they think are necessary to achieve victory. However, when his younger martial brother is killed after an argument the two had about Zhou Zishu's brutal methods, he starts to become disillusioned with his role as a spymaster and shadowy dealer of death as the leader of Tianchuang.

As a result, he has taken drastic and eventually fatal measures to leave behind his former life. Zhou Zishu planned to spend the limited remainder of his days in peace wandering the martial arts world, but he finds himself playing protector to the innocent teenager Zhang Chengling, and becomes entangled with Wen Kexing, whose dandyish front hides a dangerous identity.
