Biography
Pondmussel
Ligumia subrostrata
"The pondmussel has a small, elongated shell. The periostracum can be any where from greenish yellow to brown or black, often with dark green rays. The beak is only slightly elevated above the hinge line, and the teeth are thin. The nacre is an iridescent white. The pondmussel is fairly small, and only reaches about three inches in length. The pond mussel is a sexually dimorphic species, meaning males and females of this species have different shells. Males typically have a more pointed posterior end, while the females' posterior end is more rounded.
Host Fish for the larval stage include the green sunfish, the warmouth, the largemouth bass, and the bluegill.
