A T A R A H Mathematician "2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31..." Ata Muttered. "0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89..." Rah grumbled to herself. Avacyn slowly poked her muzzle into the study; she had to squint to see Atarah's two heads scribbling at two pieces of parchment. Candles floated in a cluster about the Aberration's heads, though she hadn't bothered to enchant them from dripping wax upon the floor and furniture. They worked in perfect concordance with each other, each side's claws were wrapped around a ratty quill as they notated. Apparently, they recited number sequences as a means of amusing themselves, seeing who could reach the highest before forgetting or stumbling. "Come in, Ava." Rah, on the right dipped her head back and peered at her visitor upside down. Her quill still scrawling away at her papers. "Apologies, that was rude of me to stare, Rah. Your process is a marvel to behold..." "It was rude, but I don't mind." She gave her a wry, toothy smile, "Ata thinks her work is too important to interrupt to greet you, so you're stuck with me for now. What do you want?" Avacyn chuckled. Ata, the left head was the 'superior' head, and made most of the decisions on behalf of them. Yet it was Rah who did the talking, implying that she was designated to the more menial tasks, like small talk. They obviously meant no offence, however, academics weren't the most sociable types and Avacyn preferred this than previous colleagues who were far more 'two-faced.' "I want to compare findings." "I see. Concerning...?" "Scamander's Theorem as applied to enchanted reflections." Avacyn placed her scroll case by her right side on the desk, "I am unsure as to whether I've made a blunder or a break through." "Hm." Rah paused to lick the nib of her quill, "Currently we are engaged, but I could see to giving it our full attention tomorrow." "Engaged in what?" Rah rolled her eyes and Ata Grunted. A typical passive aggressive disagreement between the two. "Tomfoolery." Rah sighed, "We're having a race to see who can write the formulae for transmuting phosphoric jelly the fastest. In reverse, of course. To make it interesting." Ata clucked her tongue, paying no mind to her twin. "I see, its good to have a hobby." Avacyn stifled a laugh, "Though aren't you at a disadvantage whilst talking to me, Rah?" "Not at all. Its nought but a little light music to keep me from getting too bored at this pithy little game." She stuck her tongue out and gave a hissing laughter. Avacyn watched their quills spider across the parchment quicker than she could read. They seemed to be in perfect synchronisation. "You'll have to forgive us our silly indulgences, Avacyn, we'd go out of our minds if we did nothing but study all day and night." "Of course, my friends, may the best head win." Ata flicked her tongue and Rah nodded dutifully as she took leave of the study. As she closed the door she could hear the beginning of a new recitation of prime numbers and the Fibonacci sequence drone into the night... |
