"Listen to the moon, the stars above, and tell me what you hear. A song of the wild sings in all of us."

Deep in the woods, as the nights stretch on, one can often hear a soft song ringing through the trees. It lulls and dips, but never wavers, only growing stronger as the moon travels across the sky. Those who stay to listen often speak of a wild beauty they never quite understand, always asking what would have happened if they joined in. Those who do race through the woods, chasing a pale pink hound as they join his moonlit sonata, never to be seen again.

This is the tale of the Barghest Zimri.

The frigid moon hangs in the darkness above, the night quiet. A pale pink creature sits nearby, her tail flicking softly as the snow crunches nearby. She knows she is bound, trapped like her sister, but she feels lucky. While her sister watches over a dreary old church, obsessing over broken glass and dusty remnants of the past, she's free to observe the life around her as it adapts and changes.

A small coatl pushes through the undergrowth, his eyes flicking over to meet the image of the foxlike creature briefly before he continues his journey. They both know their bargain is precarious at best. Barghests hate to be chained, and more often than not this only comes to pass through a stroke of luck on the victim's part. They know their deal is different, but the tension remains. Wiesia knows the hound wishes to run free. He knows she wants to sing to the moon, to spread what she deems to be life about the land. And he knows, if she weren't bound, she'd have been hunted down long ago.

He sets the three eggs down in the center of the field, where small pink sprouts had managed to push through the worst of the icy blanket in the Starwood. So much had been done to make these three caricatures of eggs; Stolen crystals, powerful spells, and even rituals long forgotten by most drakes had been hunted down by the drake to make this work. He'd tried so many times before, failed enough to wear him to the bone. Tonight would be different.

As their mother sang, her voice echoing with the spell that Wiesia had cast to let her sit by his side this one night, the first shell cracked. The pale light of the moon accentuated each line, each little flaw in the three shells, each possible way they could simply collapse as the others had done. But as her song finishes, the new growth from before stretching up to try and meet the stars above, something no less than a miracle occurred.

Three little noses pushed the shells of what had once been solid stone aside, three little fluffy heads turned to meet the stars above. Three little lives stumbled out of the eggs their father had carved, each one a little different. The first, like his mother, was stained by the light of the moon, a lovely pale tone to match the icy world around them. However, like his father, he is all too real, the snow shifting beneath his paws. The second is like her father, a creature of magic so powerful it could be seen in her eyes, like twin rose stars in a faint black sky. However, like her mother, she is far from real, the frail foliage passing right through her darker form. The third, however, is different. She is a balance of both worlds, solid enough to walk the world with ease, powerful enough to change that in the blink of an eye.

The coatl watches as the misty form of the fox nudges the first two away, leading them off into the night. He can see the pale pink flowers of the Starwood rise in their tracks, some frostbitten, others more vibrant than those grown on a perfect spring day. He quietly scoops up the third, his little miracle, and turns away from the new grove. He may have made a child he could finally keep, but he knows this won't be the end of it. Mana will see through the eyes of her children, whisper in their ears whenever his grip on her slips, sing with their voices whenever the moon rises full in the sky above.

The two she took with her will only be the beginning. How else can she truly fill the night with her song if not through the wild calls of her own children?
