Biography
NOT FOR SALE, TRADE, OR LENDING
The people of Sornieth occasionally hold parties, gaily chattering among themselves. They talk about news from other Flights, about themselves and their clanmates...And gossip. So much gossip.
One of them looks around, her eyes twinkling as the threads of a story begin raveling in her mind. She clears her throat — to a certain type of dragon, this noise attracts more attention than the loudest shout. They flock closer to her as she speaks those most enticing words.
"I heard a rumor..."
Of quarrels behind closed doors, romances going sour, dark deeds done in the distant past...or even yet to come! But is there any truth to these whispers, or are they wholly lies?
The rumormonger thinks nothing of this. All ears are bent towards her, and so she doesn't really care. Until she hears another voice—
"Where did you hear all this?"
"Oh...just here and there, you know," she says, affecting a careless shrug. A simple motion — but suddenly she has to concentrate to do it. It's almost as though a weight has settled between her wings.
"'Here and there'? Where might these places be, then?"
Hyreshi squints. All around her, the garden party continues, brilliantly garbed dragons laughing as they stroll among the hedges. But the one sitting across from her is still, so very still....
How else to explain the fact that she can't be seen clearly? She sits in the deep shadows of an arbor; what little sunlight falls through seems to distort her appearance. Hyreshi thinks she can make out pale markings, the iridescent sheen of wings.
A lazy blink of eyes that are...purple? Or blue?
And then the shadowy figure continues, "Was this truly something you heard...or maybe something you dreamed?"
"I don't know." Hyreshi says it a bit crossly. Her audience has drifted away; it's just her and this visitor now. "I was just...I thought maybe..."
"You thought." It's almost a sigh. And the Spiral, suddenly, is abashed. Blushing like an adolescent hatchling—
"But no, I needn't act like one. Why was I spreading all that nonsense about my clanmates?" She looks around again, but this time, she's hoping people haven't heard. "They've got their faults, but really, that's no reason to lie about them..."
"We all get a bit confused from time to time, don't we?" The figure now speaks in a gentler tone. Hyreshi's tail knots, clearly displaying her discomfort. "I guess," she mumbles.
"There, now, that wasn't so hard. Would you like to go clear things up before someone else misunderstands?"
Hyreshi turns away without another word. She loops across the garden in search of a new audience — not because she has rumors to spread, but to recant. She'll tell the truth this time, and when she hasn't got anything to share, rather than weave a story out of whole cloth, she'll humbly say, "I don't know."
The figure beneath the arbor looks on, smiling serenely. She waits a little longer, just to enjoy the sunlight and flowers, before turning to depart.
She isn't here to spin stories. She's here to straighten them out. And, for today at least, her work in the mortal realms is done.
The adopted child of two fairies. Pamina herself is no fairy, but she grew up hearing stories of how her parents' homeland fell into ruin after rumors spread by a mysterious stranger caused their two kingdoms to turn against each other. She is no dragon either, and she uses her strange abilities, many of which even the fairies who raised her don't understand, to travel freely through Sornieth. She surreptitiously joins gatherings where she knows fountains of gossip will spring up. She is drawn to these — not because she enjoys hearing them, but rather so that she can quell them before they cause any harm. It is very difficult for most beings to sense her; even spirit seers struggle to do so. Unless Pamina wills otherwise, the most others will be able to perceive of her are velvety wings, jewel-like eyes shining in the shadows, and a quiet voice urging them to think more carefully about the stories they wish to share. |
