Clan Leader

"Small quote/excerpt"

Peace was born under the loving care of his mother and father in the Windswept Plateau at the eastern cliff to the Zephyr Steppes. His days growing up were spent standing in the breeze and feeling the wind rush past his wings and enjoying the warmth of the wind that was created by the nearby lava pits in the Ashfall waste. Being so close to the fire lands never seemed to bother him much, but the elders in his clan could be heard complaining about it regularly.

Their complaints ranged anywhere from the warmth of the breeze to complaining about occasional ash cloud that drifted our way when the Great Furnace released billows of ash and sulfur. To him, these things meant home. This was where he has born and it would be, where he assumed, he would live forever.

Rumors began to spread of the violence within the Ashfall waste, and strange plumes of smoke could occasionally be seen on the horizon. The elders grew more and more restless while talk of relocating farther away from the lava fields became commonplace. Peace was now considered a full grown dragon at the age of 23 and he had completed his flight into the Twisting crescendo quite a few years ago. He was not so quick to leave his home however, and was at the forefront of the dragons who wished to stay. One night a meeting was called and the final decision was to be made on if they were going to stay or leave.

"If we do not leave now it may be too late. My son was just telling us about how he saw an eruption of fire yesterday." said Hakkan.

Hakkan was usually a quiet Tundra, but tonight the panic in the room was palpable and there was urgency in every word.

"That's enough Hakkan." Snapped Saevio, Peace's Father.

"If you keep spouting out things like that you might as well sign us all off, because the panic it will cause will do us all in. What we need is to think about this rationally. It is forbidden. Forbidden by the Windsinger himself, and the Flamecaller as well, for any dragon flight to wage open war on the lands of any other flight. To do so would violate the wishes of the Gods and no sane dragon would dare to do so."

In the last 23 years Saevio had become a pillar of their community and always urged a calm response to any emergency and this was no different. His words were spoken with thoughtful conviction and spoke of absolute truths. Not one dragon in the room could deny this.

"Now, I know the rumors have been spreading. I have heard them. That the dragons in the Ashfall Wastes have gone insane. That they kill there own and steal their young from home and nest. I've heard them, believe me! And I have spent many days watching the horizon and I say to you tonight that these rumors are only that. Rumors."

The silence in around the campfire hung heavy and thick. Some dragon's held their heads in shame & the knowledge that they perpetuated the fear that rumors brought with them. Others watched and waited to hear what would be said next.

" I also don't wish to see my family in fear. That is what we all are. Be it through blood, scale or lair, we are all family, all of us connected. I can agree that fear is never something that a family should feel. Not one dragon. So, tomorrow morning, we head inland, now go back to your nests and pack up. We leave at sunrise."

It was only a few short hours before daylight when a group of 3 dragons showed up at the camp. Two guardians were carrying a badly injured tundra and they were asking for help.

"Please, please help our friend. They came out of nowhere and demanded everything we were carrying. Our friend here refused to supply them and they attacked us. We were able to chase them off but he needs help."

Talk spread quick and the rumors gained new ground and fear spread through the clan in an instant. Cries could be heard all around.

"Send them away! They have death following them!" Shouted one voice

" Curse them! They have brought danger to our clan! We must leave at once!" Shouted another.

Dragons began turning their backs on the newcomers, dooming the Tundra to a slow death. Peace would not have any of it! His anger flared and he began to shout out as loud as he could.

" Curse them?! Curse them?! Their curse is having put their faith in all of you! You turn your backs on a dragon in need! You walk away and dare to curse those in need! Curse them?!"

His voice broke as he swallowed the lump growing in his throat.

"Curse you. Curse you all."

Peace walked over to the Tundra. He could not stand on his own so he had his guardians lay him on the ground where Peace got to work bandaging him up. He ignored the dragons passing them by, refusing to look any of them in the face for fear of seeing the heartlessness in their eyes.

By the time he finished patching up the Tundra his clan had moved on. The sun was rising over one horizon and his family was setting over the other. He had no desire to follow them. They all chose to leave him behind. He was cast away, just like they had cast these dragons out. He decided he would stay with these 3 and make sure the Tundra made it through his injuries.

For 3 days he tended to the dragon and shared in stories of the lands of his childhood. The guardians were both from the Ashfall wastes and had stories of the lava fields and the Great Furnace that sent shivers down Peace's spine. They also informed him that the Tundra was from the nature flight. They told him some of the stories they had been told, the greatest of all was of the Great Tree Behemoth. They said it towered over the land and could be seen for days before you reach the nature lands.

The stories of the Veridian Labyrinth were his favorite to listen to. They were stories about the unstoppable power of life and how all life was connected within their lands. He decided that this was going to be his destination. He would join the Gladekeeper and fight for everything it stood for.

On the 3rd night of their respite, a glow could be seen in the distance. The guardians watched as the glow of fire could be seen coming closer and closer. They knew at once what was coming for them and they knew what must be done. They woke Peace from his sleep and informed him that now was the time to run. The dragons that had injured their friend had gathered their friends, and were coming to finish the job.

"Run now, while you can still save yourself. We have death on our heels and we are cursed. We shall fight and die today to defend our ward but you do not need to share our fate. Go now, and see your big tree."

Peace did not know what to say to that. If these dragons were to fight for their lives, then so would he. He stepped up next to the guardians.

"No. I will not leave you here to die. If we must fight then I will stand with you. I do however recommend we try a more peaceful resolution. Fighting must not be the first course of action."

The guardians laughed a bit at this. They had been raised to defend their ward and fight to the death when need be. Fighting is what they were trained for. The war-band was almost upon them now and they could see, this was a fight they could not win.

"Very well, Peace. We leave the negotiations, and our lives, up to you."

Peace watched as the band came closer to see who would emerge as the leader of this band. The moon up until this point had stayed hidden behind dark clouds which had claimed the sky earlier in the day but now began to come out from behind its curtain. The might of the war-band was now clear to see and Peace instantly felt the gravity of the situation.

Their leader, a Mirror, stood out front of all of them. His skin was the color of ash and it was marred with scars. In the light it almost appeared as if his scars took on the qualities of the land of the Molten Scar. They appeared to be flowing magma as opposed to scar tissue. His wings were the color of obsidian and were obviously of no use for flight. Three large slash marks had torn the skin on one of his wings and left a terrible scar. At least he had that against this dragon, if fighting became necessary.

Behind the leader were two guardians. Easily twice their leaders size, these guardians were strapped with harnesses that held a flag. Peace could not quite see the design on the flag, what he could make out was that the flag was red and had a black symbol in the middle. These two would definitely pose a problem. Beyond the lumbering flag bearers was a collection of about three dozen others. There were representatives from each breed known to Peace and each one looked restless and ready for a fight.

The group stopped roughly 100 feet from where Peace and his friends stood. The leader turned to his guardians, and then back to Peace. The Mirror and his flag-bearers began to approach them. Peace could smell ash and sulfur, presumably carried here on the bodies of the war-band. Peace walked out to meet them. he was hoping to keep them as far away from his disabled friend as possible.

"Greeting friends from the Ashfall Wastes! Welcome to the Windswept Plateau, what brings you here tonight?" Peace struggled to remain composed. He knew that one wrong word could not only kill him, but kill his friends.

The leader of the war-band spoke quickly and harshly. "We are looking for a trio of dragons that were headed in this direction. If my eyes do not deceive me, I see them right behind you. If you would be so kind as to move out of our way we can collect them and head back where we came from."

Peace stood his ground. " I do apologize but they are in no position to be going anywhere. Their friend is injured and moving him may cause his death. If i may ask, what do you need them for?"
The Mirror spoke through clenched teeth now, his patience obviously running thin."That is none of your concern, now I demand you move now or you run the risk of earning the same fate as them."

"I will not allow you to disturb my friends. If it is a trophy you seek, or retribution, I implore you, take me instead." Peace's words were sure and unwavering.

"What?" The Mirror for the first time, took his eyes off of the Tundra and his guardians and now stared straight through him.

"Take me instead. You can take me back with you and do as you please, I care not. Take me and leave them be. It is that or you will have to fight through me and my friends back there. Now, I may not be trained in the art of warfare or in negotiations, but I have the common sense to know that while we may die tonight, we won't go down alone. Now take me with you, and we can all walk away safely. Fight us and your war-band will suffer losses and become weaker for it. Is having a broken Tundra fall to your claws really worth the losses your band would have to suffer?"

The Mirror thought about this for a moment. Peace could see the dragons mind racing in his eyes. They darted back and forth between the Guardians protecting the Tundra and Peace. Then he turned and began to walk away.

"Very well, seize the ridgeback. Bring him back to our camp and throw him into the cages until I decide what I want to do with him." The two flag-bearers approached Peace and placed a rope around his neck and lead him in to the war band where we was shackled and berated with harsh words and insults.

Before heading down the slope into the Ashfall wastes, Peace looked back to his home, and to his friends disappearing in the distance, not knowing if he would see any of them again. His future was no longer a certainty and he did not know what awaited him. What he did know however was that he would not just take it laying down. He began to formulate a plan.
