This dragon meets all criteria for the Ice Flight subspecies Northern Lights Mages.

jDdkF9W.png

"Powerful mages that serve as messengers for the Icewarden. They use their powerful magic to broadcast messages to their lover/family across the night sky of the Sornieth in the form of colored light. Pure mages are bound in service to the Icewarden and rarely leave or take a mate."

"These dragons, while still eggs just shy of hatching, are taken to the Fortress of Ends. Here they will grow up in isolation from other recruits and receive intense training until matured. Each dragon is paired with (a) 1-3 mentor(s). Trainees are schooled on the history and geography of the Sornieth as well as magic and combat skills. Among the hoarfrost coated land the little dragons grow and practice their magic and flying skills, drilling them to perfection under the ever watchful eyes of their mentors. When mentors think they are ready they are brought to the Icewarden's council to receive their test.
KYnhKTg.png The test is a task given to young dragons to demonstrate their skills and prove their loyalty in service to the Icewarden and to the Ice Flight. It can range from combat and magic use to aerial acrobatics and geography. Anything taught is fair game to be tested. In other words it is like a coming of age/graduation test. This test is also designed to highlight the particular skills of the candidate to help determine their future job.

Dragons will sometimes fail their test or later missions for a variety of reasons and thus can invoke the Icewarden’s wrath. Some reasons may include:
- Find love
- Wish to leave the Southern Icefield completely
- Find their family
Failure to complete the test/later missions could result in severe punishment that may include but not limited to: disfiguration, imprisonment, and/or banishment. Punishment may or may not be inflicted directly upon the individual.
Upon successful completion of the test the young dragon swears an oath of eternal loyalty and service to the Ice Flight and is branded with the runes. This is a visual representation of their oath and it binds them to the Southern Icefield although there are exceptions. It also symbolizes their loss of freedom by giving themselves in service to the Flight. Those with the Runes possess the greatest raw talent in magic. Some dragons have been able to manipulate the inscription to allow them to leave.

Based on the dragon's skills s/he is given a job. Mages typically serve as messengers using their powerful magic to send messages to other mages. It takes special training to be able to interpret the light messages of mages.

They can also serve as diplomats and ambassadors and may be permitted for a time to leave and live outside of the Southern Icefield. With their excellent navigational skills Northern Lights Mages make good couriers and can carry more sensitive information as needed.

A curse exacted upon all mages is that 1-5 eggs from a successful nest will be taken and raised for the messenger service. This is payment for the oath of eternal servitude they took. Hatchlings born bearing a curse mark will have inherited a lesser and milder form than the parent(s)."
"Social:
Mages are often loyal individuals who take their job and responsibility seriously making them quite stern and ‘by the book’. They are typically socially awkward and aloof as they have spent little time interacting with other dragons outside of their mentor(s). The lack of social interaction often causes mages to form strong attachments to an individual(s) and/or item(s). Dragons of this species as they age often will begin to feel an emptiness or that they are missing something, compelling them to find and complete it. It can drive dragons bitter and/or crazy. They will attempt to fill this by any means necessary. Some dragons take to books and learning, others start a collection. These habits can lead to obsession and should be monitored and corrected accordingly.

Dragons that have a mate or special someone are careful with their visits so as to avoid drawing attention from the Fortress of Ends. They do not mate or meet often, again, to avoid unwanted attention. They don't want their mate or kids to suffer from the Icewarden’s rage and their mistakes. Mages are highly protective and secretive."
