A healer born to a clan of healers, Mikan's voice can soothe deep magical wounds. The regeneration he inspires has saved many a dragon so far, and when he is called to the Cruxrose clan to heal their ailing leader, he goes into it confident and calm.

His confidence falters when he sees the state Hemlock is in. His aura is patchy and ragged, as if large pieces of it had been forcibly torn from him. And the scars on his mind seem, if anything, to be worse. Those conditions pair to cause Hemlock's feathers to moult, leaving the coatl scraggly and small.

But even so, Mikan knows he has to try. Hemlock winces away from his song at first, shivering in the far corner of the den. Mikan tries everything to soothe him. He spends most of his waking hours singing, humming, chatting to Hemlock. The others in the clan visit often, desperate and impatient for their leader's return. As Mikan pieces together the story of his patient's life, it dawns on him that Hemlock has never been whole.

Knowing at last that his mission is a hopeless one, Mikan can't quite bring himself to break the news to the rest of the clan. He stays with Hemlock, singing softly to the husk of something horrible.
