Biography

Mushussu

Mesopotamian/Babylonian

The Mushussu can also be called Sirrush, Sirrusu, or Mushkhushshu (pronounced Mus-xus-su). In Sumerian, the language of Mesopotamia, "Mus" is the word for serpent. "Mus Hus" can be translated to "reddish serpent" or "fierce serpent". Its other name, Sirrush, is rooted in a mistranslation.

Mushussu is depicted as scaly, with hind talons and lion-like forepaws. It has a long neck and tail, and has horns. Unlike most historical dragons, it is depicted as subservient. The Mesopotamian creation god, Marduk, defeated it and made it his servant. Mushussu may have represented protection from enemies, and it's famously depicted on the great Ishtar Gate.

Another interesting depiction of these dragons: You might have heard the name Tiamat, who herself may be depicted as a dragon or sea serpent. She had three children, Musmahhu (Exalted/Distinguished Serpent), Bashmu (Venomous Snake), and Ushumgallu (Great Dragon). (She had many other children, but they took other forms.) They were depicted as a "lion-dragon demon" and had wings, coming closer to what's understood as a dragon in modern times.

Here are some photos of a Mushussu.
