Soot used to be someone's shadow; whether or not the original obelisk is alive is uncertain, as no one has been able to see him again after one of his enemies had cursed his body to ignore the sunlight's warmth. Soot can only be seen or heard during daylight hours, though at night it can still interact with objects - and carry weapons/bags, too. It's very often tasked to hunt for food or to accompany other hunters to aid them in the nighttime hunting sessions. Its job is usually to patrol the lair or to stand as lookout, always silent and unseen. -Youcal
Acts much like Illusion's shadow during the day, is always nearby her.

At the start of dusk until the crack of dawn he is fulfilling his role of nightwatch.

Takes several naps throughout the day, always in the presence of Illusion, it does not feel safe to sleep without her.
