Biography

ROOK
The Spinning Flame

Clan Role: Detective
Mate: None
Pronouns: she/her
Bio: Sometimes, the upheaval of unrest is so great, the echoes are felt far deeper and farther away than should be possible. The volcano's eruption churned the waters of the sea, turning them hot, forming new underwater vents and rocks. Those who were sensitive to such changes in temperature could sense them, even from down in the depths. Those like Rook. She liked exploring the middle zones, where the pressure would still make a Guardian uncomfortable but wouldn't cause them any undue problem otherwise. She'd find interesting things, gifts, to bring back for her kin. She could carry a lot of gifts at once, thanks to her tentacles. When she started finding strange rocks and noticing the water being warmer and smelling...strange...she asked the opinion of one of her brothers, who was a scientist. But he, like her, had spent most of his time down in the Deeps and had no idea what things were like closer to the surface.

It was time for Rook to leave home, and find out about these strange phenomena. She tried to keep to the shadows as she moved up, and up, closer to the surface of the water than she'd ever been. She saw many strange things, but she didnt slow down or pause for them. She had only one goal, and that was to get to the bottom of this mystery. She followed her instincts and the smell of sulfur in the water, and at last came to the surface. She poked her head out, to see her first sight of land--of the Great Furnace, magma running down into the water and creating huge clouds of steam, making the water hiss and boil like a deepsea vent. The smell was strong, and it wasn't just sulfur and molten rock--there was something else, too.

Rook moved closer, swimming carefully, and found--dragons. They were hard at work, forging away in the heat, using it to melt metal and reshape it. Rook was fascinated. She'd never seen anything like it, before. She just wanted to stay there, watching. But, of course, eventually she was noticed, even as focused as the dragons were on their tasks. Diving back below the water would have been the smarter thing, the safer thing. But for reasons Rook wouldn't be able to explain adequately, later, she instead exploded out into the air, spreading her wings and taking to the ember-filled sky. Rook had never flown before, obviously, never been out of the water before. It felt like swimming, but better. She was weightless she was a singularity she was an arrow, going up and up and then turning in the space of a heartbeat and plunging back down, turning like a corkscrew, and hitting the water with a mighty SPLASH, trailing bright sparks behind her from the air.

This incident was what earned her the nickname "The Spinning Flame" and a reputation as a local cryptid, considering none of the dragons working those forges had ever seen an Undertide, before. And never would again, as Rook left the area soon after, mystery solved. She went deep, to tell her kin and friends about what she'd found. And then Rook tried to go back to life as normal--but she had itchy fins. Even more than just going out to look for gifts, she wanted to fly again. Noticing her distraction, Rook's parents gave her their blessing to leave and travel, and see what she could. It was a bittersweet occasion, when she left the Deeps with no intent to return the next day, but Rook felt her life was truly beginning.

She knew what she was meant to do, now. She was going to solve more mysteries.
