After almost 3 years of absolute control of Canterlot, after defeating the mane 6 and corrupting them, and banishing Celestia to the sun, she eventually sees what her mother saw in this act. She gained her victory and avenged her mother, but now what? The world was in her hooves, the entire world feared her, she had followers, but... that's it. She was alone and had no real family or friends. She was alone for so long, but she was too focused on her goal to really notice it or let it get to her. However, now complacent and goal achieved, she had nothing. It was at this time that she decided to step away from the throne long enough to follow a feint calling she had been hearing. One that led her to a place her mother created before her banishment. The Isle of Night. The home of the Children of the Night. An isle where Luna took all of the lonely, orphaned foals to live under her care and praise the night. It was here that she realized her true purpose. They needed a new guardian figure. They had waited for Luna to return for so long. She promised to return to them and oversee the Isle, but first, she had to return to Canterlot and set things right.

Upon returning, she released the Mane 6 from their corrupted curse and asks them to help bring back Celestia. To which, with the help of her Alicorn magic and Twilight's, they not only brought back Celestia, but Luna as well. Midnight was punished with a lengthy lecture and a lifelong task, but Celestia was not so cruel as to kick a pony when they were already down, so as she did to Twilight and Sunset before, she tasked Midnight to be the Eternal Watcher of the Isle. A ruler of the lost. She was to return to the Isle and serve the rest of her life as their protector and ruler. This was meant to be a lifelong lesson. She would learn from her mistakes, pay the debts of her sins and rehabilitate her violent tendencies. Returning to the Isle, she was crowned as Princess Midnight of the Lunar Republic.
