A dragon who shares her violent hue with the tree she was born from. Her dream-creating magic is viscous and harrowing, giving dragons nightmares so bad they are trapped in their own slumber.

Jubokko sees other dragons as a meal, keeping them around until she decides that her life energy needs a boost. When it comes to survival, there is no method too cruel and no dragon too precious.

HISTORY

Jubokko was not born. Rather, she gained sentience as a branch that fell from the great Red Tree. Filled with the determination to live, the branch sprouted wings and thus, Jubokko came into existence. After hundreds of years persisting as an amalgamation of wood and skin, she grew tired of how limited she was.
The great Red Tree was a formidable being that struck fear in the hearts of auspicious dragons, that held power within its roots and took life as it pleases. Now that she had been separated from her main body, it felt as though all capability had been snatched away from her.

That was until a traveler came to rest under the Red Tree’s shade.

It was on an unsuspecting hot summer’s night, where the violent hues of the tree were hidden by cold blue hues. The traveler laid their bag on the grass, and fell into a deep sleep on a curled root. Jubokko watched them with an unwavering glare, filled with jealousy that this dragon had the ability to go wherever they pleased.
The traveler began to writhe in their slumber, but the tossing and turning morphed into a sort of seizing, then they began to cough up black smoke, a panicked crawl to Jubokko for help. She watched in little interest as the dragon fell onto the grass, a deep liquid seeping out from their maw.

A surge of energy filled her body. She stepped over the collapsed dragon, her joints cracking from standing up straight the first time. While all she could manage was a hobble, she made it past the fields where the Red Tree was planted.

So it seemed that she shared the abilities of her main body after all. As long as she could absorb the life energy of other dragons, she could finally exist as a real dragon. And if only one soul was enough for her to begin walking, she could only imagine what the village up ahead could grant her.

Jubokko found herself smiling.

Jubokko, 樹木子, is a yokai from Japanese folklore that manifests as a large, red tree. It survives by sucking up large quantities of blood from the dead, and it lives on human blood.
