Consumed Soul
"The Lost Keeper"

x There are some souls that even the reapers don't want. No one knows when, exactly, they stopped ferrying them into the nebulous void. No one understood why only souls within a certain village were thus shunned. All anyone cares to recall is that eventually, it became a problem. Such souls were not wont to bide their time in quiet contemplation. As their impudence grew, so too did their ill-effects on those yet bound to the mortal coil. Sleeplessness, fits of anger and undue rage, strange diseases without cures -- the list seemed nigh on endless. In a fit of desperation, the villagers sealed those bothersome souls into skull-like effigies. They soon discovered the error in their judgement. The seals would not hold without a constant stream of magic -- of lifeblood, and should the bindings be broken, the souls would surely rise to enact revenge against those who sought to imprison them.

Thus rose the Keepers, attendants of those spectral denizens scorned even by the ferrymen. A single prisoner was assigned to each of those illustrious forbearers of the art. Throughout their lives, they kept careful watch over their charges until the day on which they perished. The tainted soul, having mingled for so many years with their own, would thus be considered an extension of their being. The reapers had no choice, then, but to take both beyond the veil.

How many decades had it been since last he'd seen his home? Irero had stopped counting. Somewhere along the way, the number had become too painful a reminder of all he'd lost. He was a Keeper. He'd been proud of it... until it meant he'd be forced to keep away.

His was a vile, vindictive, violent thing. It's presence seeped like acid into his veins. Into his tissue. Into his mind. Slowly. Mercilessly. He understood, at the end, why they'd driven him off. It was too strong for a single Keeper. They'd known so, and yet still they placed the burden upon his shoulders. He was not a pillar of strength and honor, as his fellows were. He was a sacrifice. They'd never expected him to be anything more. It would take over one day, that murderous thing chained to his own soul, and when it did — when it did...

Better not to think about that.

xxxx He wasn't certain how he ended up in the sewers, honestly. He'd wandered in through a collapsed wall and then boarded the thing up. There was enough wildlife within the stale, dirty waters to sate his hunger. Water was more problematic, but he'd learned purifying magicks in his childhood. He got by — best not to think of what the water was before, though. Best not to think of much at all, really. Better simply to be. To wander. To hunt. To roam.

How strange it was, when at last he heard voices filter down the tunnels. Their speech was strange and lilting, the syllables only half-familiar. The acid in his veins froze over. Language did not change so swiftly. How many decades had it been?

He spat curses as two figures trudged forward in exhausted union.

They were Keepers too.
