Ari grew up clever-clawed, made his first home in the soft slip of needle through fabric, found the voice which had so long eluded him in pinpricks of light between warp and weft. That was not so long ago but sometimes, sometimes he can barely picture it. He doesn't mind, though. This, now, it isn't all that different, not in the fibers of it.

He's never been sure what it was that bound him fast when war loomed, when dragons flew from the clan like beads from a snapped thread. It wasn't love, or loyalty, or fear: he thinks sometimes it might've been fate. (He thinks, sometimes, he just hadn't known what else to do.)

It was easy, though, once he took up arms, fluttering quick claws and magic sharpened diamond-hard. There was a language in that, too, he found, in all the ways to rip a body apart at the seams and lay its pieces out bare, harsh and bright and as easy to read as the drape and flow of cloth. So now in the wake of war he fights still, he drives his claws into past battles and stitches them into neat step-by-steps, parcels them out to would-be warriors to pore over, and it is easy, it is useful, it is not so different.
