  Footsteps echo in the vast hall as he walks along the corridor between pews. In his clasped hands hangs a chain, from which swings an ornate golden censer. Dark, sweet-smelling smoke flows from it to pool on the marble floor, dispersing into nothing in his wake.

Once the bells begin to toll in their sonorous, deep voices, the citizens of the nokta file into the cathedral. They leave their offerings for the Goddess, placed at the feet of her bronze statue that soars above their heads. They whisper prayers and pleas for salvation. Apostolis offers each a lit match as they make their departure, gesturing toward the wall of flickering candles, inviting them to nurture another flame to keep the dark at bay.
