Once known as Nox, Herald’s Rose, she could break all your bones and cut off your head before you had a chance to blink. Not really one for stealth, Nox relied on brute strength to win her battles rather than skill. Often found in fighting arenas, challengers would give up before the fight began. The rest of the time Nox stole from whoever she could, raking up whatever riches she could get her claws on. Known for either a swift kill or a merciful view, Nox is held as having more moral and decency than most thieves.
Later, however, Nox and her partner Rhysand (Acheron) both died in an attempted heist. Even for her, trying to steal from King Balthasar’s royal treasury was quite ambitious. They both perished in a trap room, burned to ashes. Upon arriving in the underworld, Hades acknowledged the both of them, Nox for her strength and will. Hades offered them a deal: They could go back to the Living, but they would serve as undead vessels. At night the wickedness of death would possess their souls, cursing them forever to terrorize and murder as partial ghosts. When the sun came up, their body would return to being flesh and bones and their souls would be theirs again, but the cycle would eternally continue.
Nox immediately agreed, and after Rhysand agreed, they muttered the words Hades instructed, and were returned to the Land of the Living. Bone markings covered them head to toe, Nox’s markings silver, which struck them as Hades’ vessels. Nox’s name was changed to Arioch, named after a powerful Archdemon, for her strength.
Besides this, Hades gave them each a Roc, to Nox a black one. They were to be their only companions, as death would not touch Hades’ birds. But, if they ever wish to return to the Underworld, they are to each willingly sacrifice their Rocs at the same time and place, sundown.
How she met Acheron, from her view (The Scarlet Moon, earlier known as Rhysand)
On a dark and stormy night, Nox had barged into a large city prison. She headed to loot the prisoner’s forfeited valuables, located in the prison’s basement. She used sleep potions on the guards she encountered, dragging them into shadowy corners. She’d be long gone by the time they woke up. She broke into the valuables’ vault, slung her rucksacks onto the floor, and started shoving the multitudes of weapons before her into the packs, making sure the sharp blades didn’t tear a hole in the fabric.
When she packed up all she could carry, Nox ran out the door, planning to burst out as quickly as she had came, but a Skydancer stood in her path, Rhysand, known as the Scarlet Moon. He was quite smaller than she thought he’d be from the rumors, but that just meant he was less of a hassle to her. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll step aside,” She hissed. He just smirked, holding his ground. “And I’d say the same to you, Rose.” She snarled, throwing her packs and leaping for his neck. He easily dodged her attack, disappearing and thumping down on her spine. Roaring, she smashed her back against the wall, but The Scarlet Moon’s laugh echoed through the hall. “No one taught you how to fight in tight quarters, hmm?” He leapt to her neck, digging deep gashes with his sharpened claws. She gasped in pain, flinging him against the wall. “HOW DARE YOU!!” She whipped her tail at his head, but he dodged just as skillfully as he did with all her other attacks. She wished she could actually land a hit on his smug face.
But by now the guards had heard the commotion and were pounding down the hall, spears aimed for their heads. “LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!” She lashed at Rhysand again, but it was pointless in trying to hit him anymore. It was pointless to begin with. “You should realize YOU were the one making all the noise,” he snarled back, dodging. Instinctively they both backed up to the wall, trying to figure out how to escape the onslaught of guards. “If you want to survive,” he whispered “You need to trust me.” “Why the hell should I trust YOU?” She growled, “I’d be out of here if it weren’t for you!” If only he hadn’t gotten in the way. The stubborn dragon. He pointed to her left. “I don’t care about you or what you do. But there’s a sewer drain over there, an-“ “YOU EXPECT ME TO GO IN THAT?!?” She roared furiously. She’d rather die valiantly than in a sewer. She charged the guards, sending a couple flying off in different directions. They poked at her from every direction. She resisted, but they got more jabs in than she got kills. Nox was outnumbered, and she would probably face the death penalty for resisting the guards, if she didn’t bleed to death before then. Blood ran down her face and into her eyes, making her vision blurry. She turned towards the sewer that the Scarlet Moon had pointed out…but he hadn’t left yet. He looked conflicted, roared something, and came charging himself into the fight. Smoke started to hiss from the ground, and she couldn’t see her own nose. She felt him grab one of her neck spines, pulling her in his direction. “FOLLOW ME” his voice demanded, “I can’t drag you.” She ran after him, and dived down the open sewer tunnel and into the main canal. There were paths on both sides, to her surprise. She always thought the sewers were sludge-filled pipes one would have to fly over. Nox had never been in the sewers before, but she knew they were dangerous.
The Scarlet Moon turned towards her. “All you alright?” He asked, looking at her limping leg. “Why do you even care?” She asked. “AND NO I’M NOT!!” She was fine, really, but she hated losing her treasure. He chuckled. “Hmm, yes, let me guess…you’re a princess? Can’t get your claws dirty?” She snarled, whipping her tail at him, but she was too exhausted try. She hated being called names other than Rose, she was no royalty. But he seemed to know what got under her skin. “Don’t be stingy Rose, you owe me one. Now, let me see your wounds.” She sat down, but was reluctant to let him get close. He tried peering at her wounds, but she knew he couldn’t see much with her wings covering them up. “Why should I trust you?” She asked, “If the rumors are true, you’re sooner to stab me in the heart than to dress a wound.” He smiled. “That’s the fun of it, no? But if I saved you, why would I drag you down here just to kill you?” She looked away, “You’re a sick dragon, Scarlet Moon.” The countless rumors of torture and, other extreme punishments, really had her worried. What if he dragged her down here just because he fancied her? She would rather die from the guards than become The Scarlet Moon’s new victim. He sat down across from her, giving her space. “Rumors are rumors. You surely can’t believe them all?” She shook her head, refusing to meet his gaze. Surely out of that many rumors, most of them were true? “Fine,” he murmured. “I’ll give you my supplies and you can take care of it yourself.” The Scarlet Moon reached back behind his shoulder, and pulled out a bag with a fade red cross on it. A med kit. “Here.” He tossed it, and it flopped on her claws. She dumped its contents, a couple rolls of bandages and some healing ointment. She applied it to her largest wounds that she could reach, and it stung like hell but she managed to bandage it as well. While she wasn’t paying attention, The Scarlet Moon had walked off further down the walkway, holding a compass in his claws. “Where are you going?” She questioned. He might of saved her, but she didn’t know her way around the sewers. Also, the rumors didn’t seem to add up. Her heart told her otherwise, that he even might be a good dragon. He turned around, looking her over. “Leaving” Rhysand said, “You don’t want me here anyways.” She shook her head violently, she couldn’t let him leave. And…she felt something she never felt before. Was it…love? She tilted her head, her thoughts fighting for and against The Scarlet Moon. “Stay,” she whispered, “You’ve shown me kindness. The most I can show you is respect.”
