Blood is a sign of life.
He has no scales, with chitin in place of them. Like a drone. Like his father.
But he bleeds. Drones have no hearts, no blood, no life. He bleeds and he feels both joy and pain. He is a dragon, not a drone.
IMPERFECT, the hive screams. DESTROY IT.
He runs away. He is not perfect, not like a drone. The drones fly faster, hit stronger, last longer.
But they are not invincible. The old drones endure the damage silently, for they do not feel pain. The chitin rusts, peeling off. The weakened wings snap off once they have served their purpose. Yet a dutiful drone keeps moving, the ever loyal extensions of the hivemind.
He feels pain - too much pain - and he stops. The drones are closing in. They fill the air in practiced formations, for every fallen drone five new ones appear.
DEFECTIVE, the drones cry. CLEANSE THE HIVE.
The drones dive to destroy him. His counterattacks do nothing to the strong hide of a drone. They are not dragons, they are not alive. They scratch and tear at his flesh. He is pathetically weak compared to a drone.
