Biography
CUSTARD
"here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)"
- E. E. Cummings, i carry your heart with me(i carry it in)
In reality, Charmeine pays her little attention, seeing her only as a dithering, crazy woman. The fact that Custard could matter enough to her that she would make the effort to hurt her is laughable. What does Custard have that Charmeine could possibly want? Unlike Charmeine, she's stuck in the artificial world of the frescoes. The fact that Custard doted on and cared for her in her hour of need embarrasses Charmeine; the fact that she was ever so dependent on another is mortifying, and the rumor must be suppressed at all costs. If she was reliant on this soft and frightened thing for life, is she really fit to be a messiah, a reincarnation of Blódgeóte's prophet Irene?

Custard didn't know when she was born, or when she grew up, or really anything beyond this moment. She wanders the fields of the frescoes, gathering flowers and humming little songs to herself. She tries, harder and harder by the day, to forget the morning she found a glimmering thing covered in clotted blood. She washed the creature off, killed its fleas, fed it shreds of fish from a tiny tin spoon. But soon her pretty, docile tenant became wild and cruel, blabbering nonstop about organs, muscle, and salvation. It wasn't long after that that the child became the first ever to cross the barrier from the frescoes to the concrete world, leaving behind shock and horror at its feat. In lieu of blaming Charmeine for this breach of protocol, Custard was blamed and mistrusted for the sin of not leaving the weak, starving creature to die. Maybe if she tries hard enough, the frescoes will slip the child out of its existence, like a snake shedding its dead skin. In the meantime, she prays and collects ingredients- a slip of tansy, a dandelion. She lives in constant fear of the child, and of the possibility that she will take revenge on Custard for exposing her to the world. The flowers that decorate her house and the top of her head will protect her, she knows. Charmeine could never destroy something so beautiful. |
