Biography

Thuja

Alder and Thuja are protectors of swamps and wetlands. Their children are drawn to the places where land and water mingle. When they decide on a home and settle into their new ecosystem, they subtly morph to reflect their surroundings and to be able to communicate with species they encounter. Some are peaceful and benevolent protectors, while others are willing to kill to defend their homes against destruction.

Thuja was born in a valley-bottom marsh in the center of a forest composed of cedar, hemlock, and doug fir. While her friends include animals such as deer and turtles, she moves and talks slowly enough that she can communicate with trees as well. For those who have the time to listen she can translate the forest's messages: the low rumbling of flowing sap, the turning of leaves and needles, and the network of relationships springing from constant discussions about how to share sunlight, exchanges of water and nutrients, seeds on the wind, mycelium in the soil.
Thuja prefers to stay rooted in the marsh where she grew up, passively protecting the plants in her area from disease, but once a year she travels to certain patches of old-growth forest. There she spends four days and four nights weaving her protection spells. At least for the rest of the year, anyone tramping into the forest carrying an axe or a saw will be overcome by a feeling of disorientation and be turned aside, getting lost and wandering in circles until confusion and doubt send them running for home.

Thuja plicata or western red cedar can grow up to 200 feet, but seedlings are difficult to establish. They stay small until sunlight is made available by the death of the taller plants overshading them, and even then grow very slowly. These cedars can more easily propagate from low-hanging foliage or broken-off branches, as any part of the tree that touches the ground can take root. While red cedar can't compete with faster-growing species, it thrives by inhabiting an unpopular niche: the wet soil in swamps and along creek edges. Its antimicrobial compounds make it resistant to root rot and other diseases.

Exalting Thuja to the service of the Windsinger will remove them from your lair forever. They will leave behind a small sum of riches that they have accumulated. This action is irreversible.
