Biography
Alder
|
Alder and Thuja are protectors of swamps and wetlands. Their children are drawn to the places where land and water mingle. When they decide on a home and settle into their new ecosystem, they subtly morph to reflect their surroundings and to be able to communicate with species they encounter. Some are peaceful and benevolent protectors, while others are willing to kill to defend their homes against destruction. Alder is the descendant of a mangrove god so old that he has become indistinguishable from the tangle of pneumatophores where he lives, breathing in time with the trees' aerial roots and filtering saltwater through his body. Alder migrated from the mangrove swamp to a temperate wetland, where he put down his own roots and learned the songs of warblers. As a wetland protector he learned to guard his home and its denizens from invasion. As he grew older, Alder began to focus on restoring the degraded areas on the edges of the wetland. He now travels to various sites where wetlands have been drained or destroyed offering his magic to jumpstart the restoration process. He is followed by an entourage of birds and beavers, many of whom decide to settle in these ecosystems and continue Alder's work into the future. Alder roots grow nodules that house nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The tree provides the bacteria with sugars in exchange for nitrogen from the air being made available in the soil. This allows alders to function as a pioneer species paving the way for successional species that require more fertile soil. They are often the first species to recolonize a disturbed area. |
