Bartok He/Him PROJECT: # 029 Small-Bodied Large-Winged Fae Monster Hunter | Adventurer | Storyteller he fought the Emperor dragon once, you know? it's true, really, it is. he'd show you the scars to prove it, except the thing never landed a scratch on him. he actually saved a prince from the Emperor, hey? that's how he got this fancy Proper Ring, as a reward for his heroism. the prince had been bound and thrown into Emperor territory by his regent. it was a whole thing, y'know, court politics. that stuff's always dramatic. he's met the Shadowbinder before as well. actually a really lovely lady, not at all like what people say about her. there's all the, well, shadow-slime and what have you (is that what you call it? or is it like, goop?) but really she's a very compassionate lady. helpful, once you get to know her. kind of. she gave him the Woeful Vial of Mysterious Toxin when they met last Night of the Nocturne. what's in it? oh, well, that there's some powerful stuff, you know. not something to be messed around with. poison? well, sort of. really, it depends on who you ask--and who you are. the vial, you see, the stuff inside the vial, it's a potion. but not just any potion. it's a potion that makes you... well, more. ten times on the outside, what you are on the inside. so if you've got something good inside, it can be really really good. but if you've got something bad inside... so it's dangerous stuff you see, can't fall into the wrong hands. the Shadowbinder knew what she was doing when she gave it to him, truthfully. Piloff, his Princess Petal Gecko, wasn't a gift from the prince, despite what they say about that royal blood stuff. she could still be like, royal and all of course. but he didn't get her from the prince, or from the Shadowbinder for that matter. he found Piloff in the Southern Icefields, covered in frost. it's not a nice place for geckos, you know, the icefields, or for petals. not a good place at all. he unstuck her and brought her in and warmed her up and, well. that was that, wasn't it? he tried to hand her off to someone later, who could give her a more temperate environment, but she wouldn't have any of it. bonded with him, apparently, according to some guy who called himself an expert (Bartok knows experts when he sees them, and he also knows people that only call themselves experts when he sees them; he used to be one after all). Bartok would say she's obsessed with him, more like. so anyway, Piloff stays with him now. its not a great life for a petal gecko, and certainly not one from royalty, but it's what she's chosen apparently, so that's that. his only other companion is Zozi, the Hibernal Starbear. he pulls the cart when there's not enough wind to fill the sail. did he mention his cart is wind-powered? anyway, Zozi's great, really. a bit sleepy and a bit too fond of going off on dramatic poetry tangents or bursting into song, but besides that he's wonderful. very supportive, Zozi is, a great friend. spends most of his time sleeping when he's not pulling the cart, but what can you expect from a hibernal bear? they pick up some other familiars as they travel, but those are mostly rescues or trades, which will be handed off at a later stop. he doesn't like a lot of baggage on his travels, and that includes an entourage. they keep it light, so that they can make quick getaways if they need to. it's a dangerous world out there, you know. not so dangerous anymore, not since the great Dragon-Beastclan truce. before the truce, well. Bartok used to tussle with all sorts of Beastclans during his travels, crossing borders and wandering into places where he oughtn't be. sometimes the wandering was intentional, sometimes not. it's better now, since the truce. now most Beastclans recognize him, sternly reprimanding him and escorting him out. the friendlier ones will let him pass through, and some will even welcome him to trade with them. he's a firm believer in the power of kiai, and so frequently argues with Zelos over the benefits of kiai vs mantras. |
