Not many asked Startoucher where her name came from. They assumed it was just due to her speckled look, star-like dots splattered across her body that gave her the name. But there was so much more to that. A hidden story that not everyone knew. Yet, sometimes there was a hatchling that would come over and ask her where her name came from. They would sit down, and watch the all-knowing and gentle eyes turn from them towards the sky as she slid a wing to keep the hatchling warm, spinning a tail so magical that it felt like a fairy tale. When she was born, Startoucher could not see very well. She wasn't blind, but everything around her was covered with a haze, a film that made it hard to see. The Obelisk female was plain in color, far different from her siblings all around her. Of course, her parents did whatever they could to try and care for her, but they were unsure if she was going to make it or not. Dragons would stand outside of the hatchery, whispering of the hatchling that was teetering between life and death. She does not remember what it was that night, but there was something that was calling her. Startoucher stumbled out of the hatchery, unseen by the adults lingering about, and into the cool air outside. It was the first time that she had been outside, inhaling a breath before venturing forward toward that call. It sounded high above her, drawing hazy eyes toward an inky sky that held nothing in her sight. Dark and endless, terrifying. Like the world was about to swallow her whole where she would never be found again. Startoucher does not know what it was that day that called her. What she does know is that a drop of the sky fell onto her, brilliant light illuminating her very essence, the core of her being. And for a brief moment, she felt all of Sornieth sing with her as if they were crying out all at once through her veins. Just like that, she could see the stars dotting the sky in clarity, the world around her so clear that it was disorienting. Once hazy sight was now able to see far more than she could have ever hoped, beautiful colors saturating herself. She had been changed that night, in ways she still did not understand. And perhaps, she never would. |
