Their first real memory is of a female Tundra plodding toward them with cautious optimism. Her fur struck them as odd, glistening as she moved about. Within her mane twinkling lights were woven, mimicking the sky overhead. While they did not yet know the name of those lights, they could instinctively place the time they correlated to: night. The darkness was their kin, after all. They knew it intimately, for it had been their only companion up until this point - up until this strange creature intruded upon their lands.

They cocked their heads, contemplating the meaning of the development. Perhaps their creator had finally heard their silent pleas as they drifted in and out of the hazy realm of consciousness, longing for a purpose. Perhaps this dragon would offer them the stories that they so desperately desired, connecting them to the vibrant world of the living that they saw in their dreams - one that ever so quietly eluded them while awake.

Once, out of idle curiosity, they had tried plucking at the magic woven within their realm, toying with the possibility of escape. With each tamper, however, the threads snapped firmly back into place. That simple response smothered any glimmer of hope within them, confirming that they were stuck - trapped - in this mind-numbing reality.

Until today.

“I’ve found you!” The intruder announced gleefully, snapping them from their grim thoughts. “I knew it! I knew you were real!”

They attempted to speak for the first time, their mouths unused to the motion. Their words were slow and deliberate, a stark contrast to her bubbly enthusiasm.

“Yes,” they rasped, “we are. But are you?”

They could not help asking, for their sanity had long been in question. The Tundra seemed surprised by the response.

“It depends on who you ask. I’m only dreaming this, you see - I’m a seer. My reality extends far beyond what most believe in. I’ve come to rescue you though. I’ve listened to your agony for too long…I need to put an end to it. And to you creeping in my mind - it’s unnerving.”

“Sorry,” they responded, not sorry at all. So someone had heard their whispers. At last, their life was different - if only temporary. They had a sinking sensation that this would not last long.

As if reading their thoughts, the Tundra frowned. “I cannot help you tonight. My time is limited. But I will be back! I swear to you on the Arcanist. In the meantime, do you have a name? It makes it easier for me to locate you if I know who you are.”

They think for a long while. Their creator had left them no instructions, no title to call their own. They had merely deposited them here as if they were a discarded plaything. Now, they finally had a chance to redeem themselves, to change their fate, to reclaim their own life.

They had the perfect name in mind.

“Call me Respite.” They whispered. Yes, Respite will do.

“Until next time, Respite.” The Tundra declares softly, a smile on her face. “It’ll get better soon. I promise.”

With that, she faded away into the darkness, vanishing into oblivion.

They still haven’t decided if she was real or merely an illusion to stave off their boredom.

They shall see.
