The swirls of silver flakes part to reveal a large shape looming in the mist. There is barely a sound with each slow footfall. He holds his tail poised so as not to drag it in snow. His prey is under the misconception that it is hunting. In reality, he is the hunter. Beowulf, sword in hand, creeps up on the unwitting beast. His pure white scales match the icy environs. He will not be seen until he lands the first blow. The creature he stalks has plagued nearby clans for decades. It smashes dragon eggs and steals hatchlings away in the night. After Beowulf meets it, the beast will kill no more. He grasps Hrunting the ancient blade in his claws. His breath begins to match the ebb and flow of the wind. In and out. Rise and fall. When monsters stalk the night, this dragon answers their wretched howls. His weapon the stroke of justice. His heart as pure as his bright-white scales. With brutal strength and wits to match, he cannot be felled. He would never speak of himself this way, but there is no hiding from the truth: Beowulf is mighty, and for beasts that plague the innocent, he is the end.

This noble warrior could never accept payment or renown for his deeds. His only wish is for the world to be safe. When it comes to creatures of darkness, there is not much he hasn’t slain. He travels Sornieth alone, moved by his desire to protect the weak and innocent. Beowulf acts alone because he believes no one else should be forced to stand against evil. He does not wish the burden on others. Each battle is a struggle. He has almost lost his life many a time. Still, he fights. He will not capitulate until the world’s very last monster has drawn its very last breath. In other words, his work will never be complete. He will always hunt. It is not glory he seeks, nor the thrill of battle. He only wishes to keep destruction and ruin at bay. Beowulf is a true valiant. He is evil’s bane, and for this, he is celebrated by many. His noble stature seems to place him in an era long past. Little is known about him individually, but much is known about what he represents. He values chivalry, honor, and humility. Rumors fly about whether or not he eats and sleeps, or if his blood is made of gold. If anyone were to ask him directly, he would answer in honesty: “I am not a god. I am mortal. I am a dragon like any other.”

Beowulf rises before the sun. Each morning, he awakens as the birds begin their daily serenades. He finds the highest nearby peak, climbs to the top, and begins his daily drills. Monster hunting requires that he hone his instincts until they are sharper than Hrunting. He dances through the air like wind, parrying imaginary strikes. His battle cry rings from the mountaintops. He practices motions to tackle foes of any type. He knows that not all monsters are beasts. Dragons can also become monstrous, should corruption overtake them. The creatures themselves are not his real enemies. Greed, avarice, immorality, injustice: these are Beowulf’s true foes. They are more difficult to strike down than any beast of flesh. They are immortal and can appear from anywhere— even within the self. This is why the monster-slayer refuses the temptations of fame and glory. He fears becoming a monster. Were he to fall victim to these vices, there would be none left to travel Sornieth seeking to eradicate them. Beowulf will always put his duty before himself. This is his greatest asset— and his potential undoing.

Perhaps tales will be written of his exploits for centuries to come. Perhaps his name will be sung in the villages until their throats grow hoarse with gratitude. Perhaps he will fade into the annals of history, adored then forgotten, a relic of the past. Whatever the fate of this honorable dragon may be, he surely has the makings of a hero. He does not tire. He does not weaken. He only presses ever onwards— onwards, into the shifting void. His task has become his life. He does not think of his wants or desires— only his next mission. He cannot afford to center his longings in a world so full of evil. To fight battles of epic proportions, one must become a legend. Beowulf is only mortal, and does indeed wonder about his legacy. His thoughts gather around the safety of his kin, the sanctity of justice, and leaving the universe brighter than he found it. This dragon cares not for himself. He only cares for those he may serve, and for the sacredness of the journey towards light.
