Basically: Sought out to find his charge, ended up finding an entire cavern system of elemental gems. Has visions of grandeur to start a kingdom of his own.

Big ol' WIP to get his context and character down
Very much rough draft:

[Flying over the vast terrain of the highland scrub, Dunbai scanned every inch of terrain for any sign of movement. He also made sure that his mate down below, was always in sight. He knew that her powerful legs would have no problem keeping up with him, and they would both be able to spot any danger in plenty of time, but Dunbai didn't believe one could ever be too protective. Squinting into the horizon, Dunbai spotted the edge of Carrion Canyon. He tipped his wings down, and made a loud, trumpeting call to the mirror below. As he began his descent, he noticed that Lyra was speeding up, rather than slowing down. Nearly stumbling and crashing into the dusty earth, Dunbai struggled to regain altitude. He called after Lyra, her small frame almost disappearing in a cloud of windswept dust. Wings furiously beating, Dunbai began to catch up to the swift mirror. Both parties heading closer to the edge of the canyon, Dunbai looked back down to see his mate suddenly drop into a hole that opened up beneath her.
"Lyra!" Dunbai swooped down, and hit the earth like a boulder. He tunneled down into the cave that Lyra disappeared into. It wasn't too far down until he reached his mate. Dunbai thanked The Stormcatcher that she was unharmed, if a bit shaken up.
Lyra shook the dust off of herself and looked around the small cavity they found themselves in, both sets of eyes wide. Dunbai glanced around, "Not exactly den material." "Maybe not" Lyra responded, then gestured to one end of the cave, "Think you can dig through this?" Dunbai gave Lyra a quizzical look, but began digging into the indicated wall without question.
As Dunbai dug, Lyra began to explain; "I'm picking up a crazy amount of heat behind this wall. It's all around this cavity, it almost looks as hot as-" Suddenly Dunbai's claws broke through, the wall crumbled down, and molten lava flowed into the cavity. Lyra quickly grabbed up the packs that Dunbai had put down, and they both rushed through the widening gap in the crumbling wall. Why they chose to run headfirst into where the lava was coming from, rather than out the tunnel they fell through, was beyond the both of them. Before they had even realized the absurdity of what they did, they emerged into an even larger cave of black, glittering walls, and small veins of lava flowing throughout.
Both dragons stared awestruck at the wonder before them. Still recovering from surprise, Dunbai stumbled forward and plucked a single gem from the crystal constellation. The little cyan star crackled in his talon, Lyra plucked a ruby from the wall, and promptly dropped it with a hiss. "This is incredible" Dunbai spoke barely above a whisper, as though he might disturb the elemental energy coursing throughout the wall. Lyra stared up incredulously "what do we do with it?" Dunbai imagined a whole city of dragons, crafting, curating, and exploring all the possibilities of these powerful stars. The inventions and innovations, dragons of all flights could benefit. They'd all come together and form a great kingdom of wonder, and he had to protect it.]
