Biography

Short Stories Featuring Scarlet Rot:
14122.png

One egg hatches, and against all odds, two dragons are born...

One, a loving and kind nature dragon, Hanahaki. The other, a self-proclaimed "older sister", a hardy Plagueling.

Scarlet.

Scarlet was a rarity: she was born from the same egg as her sibling, Hanahaki. Immediately proclaiming herself to be the older sibling, she tried to instill what came to her naturally in Hanahaki: strength through suffering. She doesn't hate thorn, no, it's quite the opposite, she loves her. Genuinely. She adores her sibling, and wants what she feels is best for him. She wanted thorn to be strong, to be brave, to be able to survive through anything that was thrown at her. But he was "soft".

In the eyes of Scarlet, Hanahaki was weak.

Thorn rejected Scarlet's ideas of "strength"--strength gained through suffering, sickness, and rising from the ashes of them, and when he did, Scarlet left in-search of her "homeland" on her own. She traversed Sornieth and made her way to the Scarred Wasteland on her own, looking for her people, until she eventually landed upon Wyrmwound.

She was enamored with the sickening, bubbling glow of the cauldron--she wondered if the rumors that she had heard while traveling through the world were true.

If this really is a brew churned by Plaguebringer herself... She thought. Will this make me strong? Will this make me worthy?

Scarlet isn't sure how long she spent swirling in the morbid, acidic concoction of the disease-ridden cauldron. She doesn't know how long she was away from her sibling. She doesn't know how long she was away from the world.

But when she emerged, she had changed significantly: she had sprouted a second head, her wings had become ragged and tattered, thorns had sprouted from her throats and the back of her heads... Two tails intertwined behind her, and her eyes would glow brighter than any blood moon that hovered above her.

She had survived.

She was exactly what she had wanted: she was strong.

Emerging with a second head, she decided that she would take a second name, as well. Rot.

She had become the Scarlet Rot.

Rot’s head stirs, her eyes twitching as she picks up on a subtle rustling nearby. She cracks an
eye open, expecting to see the intruder, but hoping to find that it was just the rain or wind rustling something outside of the cave she had found shelter in.

Silence follows. She sees nothing.

Her other head rises slightly from slumber, under the same control as the other—though
called Scarlet—and her bleary eyes look around the darkening cave. Right at its entrance, just out of Rot’s field of vision, stands a hatchling, small and soaked.

She can feel her expression scrunch up at the sight—nobody was supposed to be in here. It
wasn’t exactly a place she had fully claimed as her own—it wasn’t her property, nor was it somewhere she had boarded up to hide herself away, but nobody had been around when she initially sought temporary shelter for the evening, and something within Scarlet Rot bristled at the sight of this little one.

“Hello?” The guardian’s head tilts as she steps in further. She shakes off as much rain as she
can, but she still remains damp. “Why are you here? Why were you asleep all alone? Is this your home?”

A million and a half questions. Scarlet Rot groans to herself, laying her heads back down
against the cool, grey stone beneath her. Do these little ones ever run out of energy? No, of course they don’t.

“Are you okay?” The little one badgers on, the sound of her trotting footsteps growing closer
to Scarlet Rot with every single word. “It’s raining and cold, and you’re all alone here. You don’t even have a blanket.”

You sure talk a lot, Rot bites back the urge to say. Can’t you just lay down for a nap?

“I’m just resting here.” Scarlet responds, opening her eyes to meet the caring eyes of the
hatchling. “I wasn’t worried about being attacked—look at my neck.”

The hatchling lowers her head, peering more closely at the fangs that had spurted from
Scarlet Rot’s throat years and years ago. “Oh, yeah! Those are cool! But still, they’re not everywhere on your body!”

“That’s fine. It still keeps others away from me.”

“Does it hurt?”

The question, as simple as it was, felt as though it came out of thin air. As if this child had
manifested some worry all-of-a-sudden now that these things that had grown on Scarlet Rot were brought into the conversation.

“It’s fine.”

“It hurts…?”

The hatchling’s wings droop at the response, causing Rot to roll her eyes and loll her head
slightly to the side. Scarlet, on the other hand, raised her head slightly to make more clear eye contact.

“I decided that this was for the best. I would grow stronger if I trusted in the Plaguebringer
and—”

The hatchling lowered her head, moving her face closer to Scarlet’s as she interrupted. “You
wanted to be stronger!”

“Yes, and—”

“So, you do need someone to protect you and take care of you!”

“Not—”

“That’s me! You’re my charge!”

Rot, unable to contain her frustration, let out an irritated sigh. “I am not your charge, and I
do not need a child to watch over me.”

“But you’re all alone!”

“And I am fine.”

“But…”

“You’re too young to search for a charge, anyway.” Scarlet said, bumping her jaw against Rot.
“Where is your family? Your clan?”

“I left them. Awhile ago.”

“You left them.” Not a question, a statement. Repeating what the little one only half the size
of Scarlet Rot had said. Hoping that there was an explanation, that there was something waiting beyond her words. Hoping that maybe, repeating it back, would make her come to her senses.

She left her family? Scarlet Rot had no right to judge. She has no right to judge. She seeks
Hanahaki out only to see if she’s grown “stronger” by the standards of the Plague. When she seeks thorn out, it’s always out of hope that he has come to his senses, that thorn understands why Scarlet Rot became what she did, and why she wishes Hanahaki would follow suit.

But that’s never the case. Hanahaki remains unchanged. Weak.

“M-hm!”

And yet this hatchling…

“How long is awhile?”

“I’m not sure… A few dozen years?”

… Has been alone for a few dozen years. Seeking something to guard. Surely she has faced
Hell itself on her lonesome. Surely she has had to fight to survive. And yet here she was, standing so firmly in front of Scarlet Rot. After a few dozen years, surely she had to have grown up—and yet, she acts so stubbornly young. Where is she from? Earth? Or somewhere else?

“What did you say your name was?”

“I didn’t! I’m Kyanite!”

“I’m Scarlet Rot.” Scarlet sighed, lowering her head back down. “Mind the fangs, and you can
lay down against me. The fur on my neck keeps me decently warm, it’s sure to help dry you off.”
