‡ When this did not destroy her, Shizuna had Patchkey dragged to the Empresses. Before a throne so bright it made her eyes ache, Patchkey learned her insignificance in an entirely separate way.
‡ Now Patchkey does their dirty work. She's a showoff, and smug, but those who think that makes her an easy target have made a fatal mistake: Patchkey has had her mind exposed to the darkest truths, and has come away with a blood-screaming exhilaration, a refusal to bend. More than one opponent of the empire has believed her to be the weak link at the throne's side. More than one opponent of the empire has been broken to nothing more than flesh and bone.
