Biography
Whalefall
In the deepest corners of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, where it is both the darkest and coldest, life for all creatures both big and small is harsh and lonely. Few dragons visit the barren, ever dark floors of the trenches that wind across the bottom of the Tidelord’s domain, since food is scarce and the lack of light is almost as crushing as the pressure, but every now and again one may come across a ghostly Whalefall dragon. Identified by their dark, dreary colouration and their tarnished skeletal markings, meeting a Whalefall dragon in the darkness may feel like coming across a bad omen. On the contrary, in the bleakness of their surroundings, the kindly Whalefall dragons take both care and comfort in their work as cultivators of the seabed and the community of creatures that inhabit it.
Despite their menacing appearance and imposing stature, Whalefalls are far more akin to gardeners than predators. They roam the ocean floor, tracing slow and often solitary paths, tending to the small villages of creatures that congregate around them. Pale crustaceans and tiny octopuses will cling to their fins and spines, bony fishes and ghost sharks follow in the wake of their large wings; a tiny caravan of scavengers that find sanctuary on the shoulders of these abyssal giants. Whalefall dragons will roam the dark waters for the sunken bones and bodies of large prey like whales and fish that drift down from the surface, leading their little communes to vital sources of food and shelter, often caring for these new and concentrated communities for decades at a time. While whale carcasses are the most common candidates for these seafloor gardens, at the end of their lives a Whalefall dragon can take comfort in the knowledge that they too will go on to sustain the eels and crabs and worms that they once cared for, tended to by another Whalefall dragon who has taken up the charge. In a place as hostile as the bottom of the sea, life does not have to be warm, and death does not have to be lonely.
