Silence does not exist.

Not to Kaiju.

The shop is never silent. It never has been, overflowing shelving teeming with gadgets and gears. Clocks are ticking, steam is hissing, gears are grinding.

Kaiju can hear them all, and he is at peace in the dissonance.

The small antique shop may just be the noisiest corner of the clan, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“What more is left before we open for the day?” Kaiju asks absentmindedly as he adjusts a stack of gears, precariously balanced at the edge of a shelf.

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog informs.

“Of course, thank you. I’d nearly forgotten,” Kaiju expresses briefly, slinking behind the counter and retrieving a light sack, a handful of shimmering treasure and glimmering gems within. “With how many dragons need a conversion done on the spot, it would be an oversight to not have both prepared.”

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog agrees.

With no more to do except wait, Kaiju reaches for a twist of copper and iron, gears held together with convoluted scraps of metal. Perhaps today it might function. Perhaps not. Regardless, Kaiju will try.

“Rivet?” the Cog Frog suggests.

“The gears are correct, we’ve tried that already,” Kaiju reminds, “It is the connections, it must be. We should disassemble another clock and take another look at the workings.”

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog reminds, a hint of exasperation in its metallic tone, nodding towards the crumbling tower of disassembled clocks in the corner.

“Those are useless. We’ve already taken them apart. I need to see the workings of a functional clock in order to fix this one,” Kaiju tells.

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog counters.

“Of course I should have paid more attention when disassembling the others,” Kaiju defends, “But I did not, therefore I must disassemble another one.”

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog sighs.

“It doesn’t matter if another disassembled clock is another clock that cannot be sold,” he argues, “as when I decipher the secret to repairing this one, I can repair all of them, and they can all be sold.”

The Cog Frog says nothing, simply leaving Kaiju with a skeptical expression creasing tarnished metal that, by all rights, should not be capable of expressing emotion.

“Don’t look at me like that. You know I am right,” Kaiju sniffs, turning his attention back to the broken clock. Another look simply reaffirms his theory. He cannot continue without examining a functional device.

“Cog, fetch me one of the clocks brought in last week,” Kaiju requests, not looking up. “At least we determined that those held little value. We will not lose much, if anything, by disassembling them.”

“Rivet,” the Cog Frog mutters as it stands, old gears grinding together in its joints, but it bounds off to locate the clocks.

“No need for that attitude,” Kaiju sniffs in mock offense, but he is well aware of the Cog Frog’s sarcastic inclinations. He would never wish for the Cog Frog to be anything else than what it is, for its blunt words, laced with sarcasm, are what he likes most about it.

Metal scrapes on metal as the Frog returns with the clock, grating noise echoing through the small shop.

Kaiju knows nothing of silence. He knows the sound of metal scraping, clocks ticking, gears grinding. He knows the sound of the Frog’s voice, and he knows the sound of sarcasm.

He knows nothing but noise, and he is content.
