Though Luther descended from a line of powerful magic, against all odds, he was born with very little power to call his own. Perhaps the seal on his mother's magic was somehow passed down. Perhaps it was simply a rare genetic anomaly. No matter the cause, Heni would simply not have it. His father took him to a sorcerer acquaintance as a hatchling in hopes that he could fix Luther, perhaps tap into some hidden reserves of magic that could not be sensed on the surface, or remove any seal that may have been inherited. The result was there was no such thing, magic or seal. You can't release what simply isn't there. Regardless, Luther stayed with Elano, who became his master in magic. Elano trained him as he did his own children. His methods were cruel and rigorous, as he deemed it necessary for his own cursed bloodline's survival. He didn't think to hold back on account of Luther's age, and he only pushed Luther harder to compensate for his lack of innate ability. The sanguine runes carved into his flesh by his master, dyed with power and his own blood, were thus imbued with artificial magic. The borrowed power now engraved into him was incompatible with his own energies, causing immense strain on his mind and body. They pulsated and stung whenever they were called upon, almost as excruciating as the day he received them, a burning reminder of his deficiencies. |
