Ateria was desperate to try out these new materials on someone else. As much as he loved his mate, both of their heads were much to busy with their job. He could ask one of his troupe, but Cometfrost was busy making goo-goo eyes and Rargal never enjoyed riddles as much as slapstick. He wandered about, weaving between the wavering crowd towards the blocked off caves. At least there would be some peace down there, and a bit of a cool down away from the desert heat. His voice echoed strangely down here, bouncing in ways that felt unnatural and crude. Soon he realized it wasn't his voice at all.
"Tedious tedious, if you had spare hands you could help you know." He unknowingly had wandered into the stone masons quarters, a large clay cave with piles of statues. She was carving away at another aberration, as she always did, busy detailing small individual scales into it's belly.
"Oh! Hi Cometa! Sorry to bug you."
"No bugs, no bother." She murmured, practically holding her breath for steadiness.
"Would you mind terribly if I tried some new material on you? Its mostly just wordplay and riddles, nothing too fancy." She waved her other hand in a 'go on then' motion, mouthing something to her creation. As expected they weren't the most engaging of crowds, but she did give excellent notes. She cracked a smile at a few, but much to his disappointment she had yet to give a true laugh.
"Hey, do you wanna hear a rock pun?"
"Yes, of course." She nodded, not looking away from their work.
"Cool, gimme a minute I'll dig one up." Cometa stilled, hand slowly falling away from her last looping engraving. For a moment Ateria worried he had stepped on some nerve, until her shoulders heaved and she choked out a laugh. It sounded like someone who had never laughed before, as though it was an effort to get the noise out, but the crinkling tears in her eyes showed them to be quite genuine. Ateria preened with pride, letting her shake out the sound. To his suprise she turned to him and not their task.
"That was excellent."
"Thank you, thank you, the highest of praise coming from you."
"I'm just glad you have no mountain jokes." She grinned, tail curling around her legs to almost mirror the statue.
"Oh do you not like those?"
"No no. I find them to be hill-areas!" A moment passed before he sputtered, falling into laughter. Cometa laughed alongside, their voices echoing throughout the cavern louder than any crowd.
