Biography
OREAD
THE FUGITIVE MINER
stubborn - free - bittersweet
PERSONALITY It would be wrong to assume that Oread never regretted leaving The Deep. There were times during her journey where all she wanted was the embrace of her family: times she felt alone, frightened, misunderstood, rejected. Just as often, however, there were moments of joy and tribulation: bonding with dragons on the surface, conversations long into the night about their differing cultures, festivals and markets and hatchdays and beauty all around her. Through her travels, Oread learned to love the light. Summer in the Southern Icefield, when the sun rises so high it nearly never sets, is her favorite time of year. The ice of Rimebound Cove is sculpted and dyed to filter the light into a mosaic of color, both above the water and under. Despite being the founder and de facto leader of the settlement, Oread is an introvert and becomes easily stressed when problems begin to occur. Basking in the light is one of her favorite activities to calm down, a personal ritual that helps her refocus so she can better guide her new, mismatched little family of surface dragons and beastclanners. She has a reputation for being a very peaceable, passive leader. While she leaves the internal governing of her clan to members with more of a head for judgement, she is just as protective of the group as any guardian. HISTORY Before resurfacing from the dark abyss of The Deep, Oread was a miner of sorts. She spent her days in dark chasms, gathering minerals and metals that would be refined and utilized by the settlement for any number of purposes, content with her lot in life. It wasn't always easy work, but it was rewarding. She was useful. When discussions began about the possibility of reestablishing contact with the surface, however, something sparked in Oread. As a hatchling, she had always wondered what the world beyond the depths was like. Finally, it seemed, she might get her chance to explore. Thus, she put in a request to join the first parties venturing upwards. That request was denied. Miners, after all, wouldn't be needed on the initial diplomatic missions. What they needed were the resources to craft gear for the colony maren to survive the pressure shift, and Oread was part of that supply chain. She was told in no uncertain terms to remain, and that while her request could be reconsidered eventually it was unlikely to ever be approved: she was needed at home. She did not have a reputation for being rebellious or impulsive. By all rights, she should have let it end there, returned to her content and comfortable life and left well enough alone for the sake of her community. She did, for a while. Roughly one month after contact was reestablished with the surface, Oread fled her home, her people, and her family. She took nothing with her. She never looked back. --- Oread carved out her home in Rimebound Cove after she had her fill of traveling the world. Her journey had been a long one, and though she loved every bit of it, she found herself ready to settle once more. Of course, The Deep hadn't taken kindly to her betrayal of sorts. Returning home would not come without punishment, judgement, restriction. Rather than risk the wrath of her birthplace, Oread settled in a quiet corner of the Southern Icefield, where she would be free to do as she wished and resume her travels should she ever want to. It was here that Naiad finally caught up to her, was convinced to settle with her, and helped her found the clan they would eventually call home. |
