Chel and Erebus arrived together, looking for a home. WinterRose, the only Imperial in the clan at the time, took them in. (It was thought that Erebus should be raised by another imperial, and he would not be separated from him "blood brother")
Chel, as it turned out, has a propensity for healing, and became WinterRose's apprentice.
Chel has difficulty staying awake at night, which is unfortunate as Erebus is very much a night person. But they meet at dawn and dusk and tell each other of their adventures and dreams before parting ways again.
When the caravan formed, Chel saw it as his duty to go along and be their healer. (It also made a nice break, since he had recently lost both mate and children to a centaur attack) For a while, Chel acted as temporary commander, but was relieved to pass the mantle of leadership on to Rana.
