Joelle has always been seen as an odd dragon, ever since the day she hatched. When other dragons her age were learning to hunt and track prey and fend off beastclans, she would hide away to study the great dragon gods scattered across the land or wonder about the mythology of their beastclan enemies. When it was time to learn to fly, she would let her mind wander and dream up stories about superheros instead of paying attention to the teacher. When her elders tried to teach her how to harness her lightning, she adopted a new tactic. Tired of being the one always called out for failing, she would spend more time flirting with the young males around her. Her logic was if she could get someone else to mess up, then no one would yell at her for a change.

As Joelle aged into a fine young adult dragon, it was clear that a personality like hers was of little use in the Shifting Expanse of the Stormcatcher. Not only did she have a poor work ethic, she now interfered with the productiveness of others! Her birth-clan felt they were left with no choice. They banished her from the lair she had known as home for all of her short life.

For the first few days, Joelle was in shock. Sure she had been yelled at...but she never dreamed she might end up punished like this. She made her way through hostile terrain, doing her best to feed herself and avoid the beastclans. A lone, undertrained dragon like herself was quite vulnerable like this. Yet Joelle managed to survive. Slowly she made her way north, until the brooding dark clouds gave way to a brightness like she'd never known. At first she thought it was the greatest lightning flash in the world, but it was only when it failed to fade and no thunder came calling that she realized this was something else. As her eyes adjusted to the great glow enough that she could look without squinting, Joelle got her first good look at the realm of the Lightweaver. She traveled onward until she found an empty depression in the ground covered in soft grass. Near the point of exhaustion and weak with hunger, she curled up in this soft spot for some much-needed rest.

____Though she was young, when she decided to focus on a task Joelle could prove quite clever. It took no time for her to figure out that as a stranger in a strange land with no home to return to, it would be best if she came across as meek and non-threatening. So it was that when a fuss of angry voices woke her from her slumber, she did her best to appear small and weak. The cozy spot where she decided to take her rest turned out to be no ordinary part of the landscape. It was actually an empty nest belonging to a clan of Light dragons! And they were most surprised and displeased to find a strange dragon curled up inside one of their nests.

____Joelle quickly stood up, mumbling quiet apologies that she had never seen a Light nest, and thought that she had only found a nice place for a nap and she would be going now. But she underestimated her physical condition. Weeks of poor eating and sleeping left her limbs uncoordinated, and she tripped over her own tail as she tried to climb out of the nest. Once they saw how Joelle's travels had truly weakened the young Imperial, their attitudes shifted. Two kind-hearted females insisted that Joelle shouldn't rush off so soon. She should at least come to their lair, where she could have a good meal and proper sleep to recover her strength before going on her way. And that was how she came to stay in the realm of the Lightweaver.

____While she kept the exact details of her banishment to herself, Joelle told her story to the Light clan that had found her. Perhaps she had a talent for telling stories. Or perhaps this clan was just full of especially kind dragons. Whatever the reason, her story touched the heart of one of the clan's more important males. He took quite a liking to her, and Joelle used her skills in flirting to woo him further. Though she didn't quite expect him to take her as a mate.

____Joelle quickly regained her health in the care of the Light clan. She grew stronger and more vibrant in this land, a land that seemed like a carefree dream when compared to her old home. Her own fun-loving nature seemed to fit right in. She felt relaxed here, more than she ever had in the Shifting Expanse. So much so that when a bold young Snapper expressed interest in her, she accepted without a second thought. It never occurred to her that her Imperial lover may not take kindly to this betrayal.

____To say he was outraged would be putting it mildly. For a moment, Joelle feared he would actually go as far as to smash the eggs in the nest she hovered over. What happened instead was almost as cruel. It was a hard lesson, learning that the Light clan could be just as serious as her Lightning family. Both she and the young Snapper were declared exiles.

____With no time to collect her belongings or even her eggs, Joelle was immediately chased outside the lair, with the threat of not wanting to know what awaited her if she dared return. She didn't see where the Snapper went, though she thought she heard someone say the name "Lightweaver" as she fled. She never saw him again.

____Fear kept Joelle going until her body demanded that she rest. Finding a sheltered spot in a cluster of trees, the confused dragoness curled up and wept. What, exactly, had she done wrong? She didn't understand. No one had ever indicated that, to this clan at least, mates were very serious business. Alone, tired, and hungry, she eventually cried herself to sleep.

____Hours passed, and eventually a gentle nudge brought Joelle back to wakefulness. She blinked and yawned, then blinked again in surprise. The last thing she expected to see was her young daughter curling up next to her. When asked what the little one was doing here, she learned that her daughter had chosen to flee the clan and her father while everyone was sleeping. Joelle was moved deeply by her daughter's affection, and grateful for the packs full of food she brought. But deep down she worried that she wouldn't be able to properly care for and protect her daughter. Especially not if they were traveling through strange lands.

____Together, mother and daughter traveled through the Sunbeam Ruins. It was not an easy journey. Especially once their packaged food ran out. They had to take care not to impose on other clans' gathering grounds, while also avoiding the attention of Beast Clans. It didn't escape Joelle's notice that her daughter was better equipped for surviving. She hadn't neglected her lessons as a hatchling, and as a result she could fly, hunt, and fish much better than her mother. Joelle eventually came to a difficult conclusion.

____One day the dazzling glow of the Sunbeam Ruins grew faint as they traveled. The land grew dull in appearance, at least compared to what they left behind. The unnatural light was replaced by the faint scent of salt and the roar of waves crashing in the distance. The pair had reached the bountiful lands of Tidelord, the Sea of a Thousand Currents. It was with a heavy heart that Joelle turned to her daughter.

____It was not easy, telling her daughter that they must part ways. The little one wailed in protest, only for Joelle to shush her. She told her daughter not to make this harder than it already was, and that she knew her daughter was brave, strong, and resourceful. Parents should take care of their young children, not the other way around. Joelle was more a burden than travel companion, and she knew it. She urged her daughter to go and find her own way, and a place where she would be happy and accepted. Slowly, reluctantly, the little one took wing and turned to the northwest, a direction that would lead her to the Arcane or Plague territories. When she could no longer see her daughter, Joelle turned more to the south and made her way towards the sea. She'd heard nice things about Windsinger. Maybe one of his clans would have a place for her.

____Travel alone was as difficult as she remembered. Joelle did her best to stick to the shallow coasts of the great sea. She was a poor hunter, and an even worse fisher. Without her daughter, she soon felt herself growing weak and lean as the weeks past. Still she pressed forward. She didn't dare look back.

____One day she strayed close to a lair's territory. She had grown weak and frail with hunger, enough to risk crossing the local dragons if it meant a bite to eat. But she was found before she could find her meal. A Guardian who looked out of place called to her. He was laden with many things, as if planning a long journey. He introduced himself as a traveling Merchant, and asked if she was looking for something. In a daze, Joelle asked if he could sell her a home. It was to her surprise that the Guardian thought for a moment before telling her to follow him.

____The Guardian, Rödd, gave her food and shelter as they traveled. Her strength of mind returned quickly, though her body was slower to recover. He told Joelle that as long as she contributed to the well-being of all, a dragon named Ymir would welcome her to the clan.

____Thus Joelle came to live with Clan Jökuldreki in the Southern Icefields. As she recovered from her arduous early life, she studied under the gentle guidance of the Coatl, Móðir. Through her nurturing, Joelle came to serve as a Priestess and teacher to all young Jökuldreki hatchlings. She has vowed to make sure no hatchling is without the survival skills that she so desperately lacked in her early life.
