In a dead, abandoned place, an eternal dance took place. On wooden, rotting stage, two dragons dance; their forms flicker, held together by curse and fate. Though the fox smiles wickedly, his wrists are jerked back and forth by the porcelain doll. Though the porcelain doll leads the dance, her ankles are chained to the stage.

The seats are empty, no audience in sight. There is no applause when the dancers break free of each other, only muted screaming as both collapse and crawl back to each other. They're both revolted by the need for each other's touch, but neither can truly face the consequences of leaving.

In this twisted theater, a nest lies amongst the molded velvet seating of the auditorium. Draped over the eggs are the silks and scratchy fabrics of the costumes, brought from backstage to cushion the fragile eggshells. A caretaker comes and goes, never staying for long, but keeping the eggs warm enough to hatch underneath the September full moon.

For the short time between hatching and independence, the nestlings are cared for by their oldest brother. Hal sweeps them under his wings and warms them with a thick coat of red and white fur. They know love, however bittersweet it may be, until it is torn away from them as they are ejected from their mother's dream.

Demetrius knows he is dying. Ever since he was thrown from his mother's dream, he could feel his body giving way; his muscles became weak and frail, and he is struck by overwhelming dizziness no matter what he does. He knows he is dying, and he knows that it's unfair.

He slips through dreams and the waking world with relative ease, though nothing ever helps his ailment. It's only when he accidentally entraps a dragon in a labyrinth of dreams that Demetrius realizes how he can regain his strength. The more his prey struggles, the stronger he becomes. After so long plagued by pain and a withering body, how could he reject this blessing?

When he traps a dreamer, he brings them into nightmares of his own making. He torments them slowly, letting their agony and misery stretch out for an eternity, feeding off their struggle. When he grows bored, he ends the game, and goes off in search of another dreamer. Demetrius does not know, or perhaps care, about the way his dreamers wither away in the waking world; trapped in a coma of nightmares, slowly slipping further and further from life.

  • Travels all over Sornieth, leaving withering drakes in his wake
  • Either doesn't notice or doesn't care until he finds one particular dragon
  • Specifically, he finds Pandora, a dragon he once had in a dream
  • She was the first he ever found to have escaped his labyrinth, and he wanted to know how
  • Became like a game to him, making his dream weaves more and more complex to test her
  • Constantly came back, seemingly out of pure spite
  • Well, spite and hope combined
  • Eventually trapped him as she herself woke from a dream he was observing
  • Conflicted since he still knows he was dying, but now is bound to a very living body
  • Became a paradox of sorts, as this perpetual limbo state of life and death was torture for Pandora, giving the Barghest life, and yet with that vitality came reprieves, losing the boon that torment wrought on the pair
  • The pair continue to search for the hope Pandora held, as well as the spite Demetrius knew well
  • Their offspring often embody fragments of themselves they misplace on their search, fragments of madness abound
  • An automaton of a drake named Bister sometimes provides a reprieve for the pair, leaving a fragment of himself and Pandora's hope behind; such fragments don't bear the curse of a Barghest
  • The rest, unfortunately, are plagued with madness, knowing they are something that was never meant to be
