The last full moon of summer lingered in the sky. Beneath its light, Iqariel presented her newest creations - creatures woven from witch magic and strands of Haiku’s fur. The ritual was always elaborate, the ground etched with dark alchemical runes in the shape of a summoning circle as the flicker of surrounding fire licked against Iaqriel’s scales. Her claws fiddled with the shapes before her as Haiku watched her inquisitively. The ingredients were wound together with willow saplings until they took the shape of wicker dolls. The moonlight streamed between the crisscrossed branches that comprised their forms as Iqariel held them towards the sky. “Under this Harvest Moon” she spoke “may I bless unto thee this new form. . . this new life”. She let several drops of her own blood fall onto the dolls. The fire raged as a gust of wind blew tongues of flame and speckled cinders towards the sky. Fire and moonlight entwined, engulfing the trio of wicker dolls, yet instead of burning them away, it appeared to cover the exposed willow meshwork with sheets of muscle and flesh until three new beings sat before Iqariel and Haiku. Their eyes gleamed golden yellow - shining with the combined light of moon and fire. The children were called by ancient names. The first was Rowan, a beast of earth and flame. He shimmered most brightly with the warm glow of fire entwined with the earthen hue of willow branches and soil. With his presence came fire that promised to burn away any substance in its wake. There would be nothing that he couldn’t reduce to ash and cinders. The second child was called Lammas, who burned with a muted flame that gleamed with the distant shimmer of moonlight and stars. His presence did not decimate the earth as his brother, but brought a warmth that bestowed an abundance of life. In his presence, the harvest would be blessed and grow in surplus. . . although that growth was sometimes more a curse than a blessing as crops and plant life often threatened to overtake the civilizations that cultivated such things. The final child was Salem and he became a creature of vengeance. He was not comprised of either moonlight or fire, but that of the blood his creator had let fall upon his form. He was a promise to hunt all those who had done harm to the witches of the past, and he would not stop until that blood, too, had been spilled.
