Background:
Cleitus is a (former) researcher who delved way, way too deep. She also happens to be a (former) cultist of The Shade. (those two might be related)
After her allegiances were discovered, she faced the choice between death and exile, which sent her fleeing Starfall Isles and wandering the Scarred Wasteland. After regrouping in a small band of fellow fae cultists, they managed to capture a clueless, injured, obviously out-of-place mirror. He introduced himself as Cody of the Starwood Strand, a scholar of the arcane, on his way to find "his people".

"If that needs be, then yes."
"Wait..." The fae fluttered closer, "you understood? You can understand what I am saying?"
"Is that rare to you?"
...it was, indeed. Cleitus was secretly relieved to find a talkative companion who was not one of her fellow fae, who came to either despise her for her treason, or be her compatriots in the faith that she was starting to lose. Cleitus the Merciless seemed to find mercy, afterall. Instead of sacrificing the defenseless linguist, she "took him captive", secretly promising him to have her band accompany him and release him once he has safely reached his destination.
As fate would have it, it did not turn out as straightforward...
