Biography
Paeonia Mairei is one of roughly 40 species of peony and is endemic to mountains in central China. The plant grows within a range of 45 to 100cm (1.5 to 3.2ft) with flowers about 10cm (~4in) across. The flowers grow with one on each stem and bloom in early spring. It can be found growing in deciduous forests on lime and grows between 1500 to 2700 meters (4921 to 8858ft) in altitude.
It is an ornamental plant, only having recently become available outside of China. It is one of the first herbaceous varieties to bloom and is reported to recover well from frost. However, it does not lend itself well to full sun but still requires enough sunlight to thrive.
