Biography

Raja

The wind whispers. Its message is brought through out the land, to the forests, to the mountains, to the ground, to the plains. Its message is never the same. Some are harsh, nearly knocking you over. Others are gentle, nudging you along down the path. It guided her, as it did for so many others. It spoke to her, as it did for so many others. And she listened, like so many others.

Raja does not know where her name came from. Perhaps long lost parents who whispered it outside her egg's shell. Maybe it was a passing dragon who stumbled upon her egg. It may have been the wind, whispering its secrets to the lost young Raja.

Or maybe it was the name she gave herself. Who knows. It was a long time ago.

Raja's earliest memories where of the stars greeting her as she made her way out of her egg's shell. There was no one near; Not a single footstep or breath to be heard.

She would've starved, left out on her own. But the wind was there. It brought her food. It gave her shelter. It nursed her, until she grew strong enough to fend for herself.

The moment she could it was gone.

Its absence was strange, at first. The prey often got away, slipping out from Raja's talons. It didn't help that she grew fast. Her great wings often stood out on the fields. She made do with what she had though, she became familiar with the plants. She knew which ones were poisonous and which were edible. That doesn't mean she learned the easy way though…

A few dragons have crossed paths with her. Many spirals, a few sky dancers. None looked like her. And none could explain why she was there. All gave her suspicious looks before flying away, gliding through the skies on wind currents.

She didn't belong. She knew it, they knew it, even the prey knew it! If she was lucky, some prey would stare in awe as she approached, allowing her to gobble them up before they recover.

She started to wonder. One day, she wondered a few feet beyond her hunting grounds before rushing back. The next she went another few feet before running back. Another day, she was almost a mile away, but ran all the way back.

She didn't belong, but she couldn't leave. She hadn't realized how she had missed the wind until she became desperate. She was desperate for freedom, for answers. She had so many questions: What is the rest of the world like? Is there another world? Do I have parents? Why were they never there?

She cried, cried out to the wind. It was there for her once, why wasn't it there then? Winds blew through the tall grasses, but none were the wind that once raised her. None whispered its messages through out the plains. She was abandoned.

-

That night was harsh. The winds screamed in her ears as she tried to rest. Sleep was almost in her grasp when a loud shuffle in the bushed sounded. She thought it was the wind, at first, but quickly realized it was another...dragon? It was an odd being, with four eyes and one pair of wings that looked like a spiral's. But there was only one set. What a weird being?! Her jaw dropped in awe.

The new creature spotted her. They gave each other a long stare before the thing- no, he- spoke.

That was when she met Vine.

-

A cranky, 1 week old, NightSky whined about something LeafWing said. LeafWing, who was ridding on Raja's back shouted something back at her. Delana didn't say much of anything. Her first hatchlings were a handful.

They were making a long trek to the famed Starfall Isles. Vine had said something about it before, but she couldn't remember. He had given himself to the Windsinger to give the family some money. Raja was fine with that. He never wanted to be with the children anyways, always making excuses on why he couldn't play with them or watch over them.

They were approaching the Scarred Wasteland; Barren ground was becoming more common. A few skeletons here, a couple of acid pools there. NightSky complained her feet hurt. LeafWing said his feet would hurt even more if he walked. The compromise was that they both sat on Raja's already aching back.

Delana was quiet the whole way, only to speak up as a small group of mirrors ambushed them, surrounding the four dragons. The biggest barked a few things, making LeafWing cry and NightSky whimper (At least it made them stop their arguing over who got more of Raja's back). They weren't welcomed guest, that was for sure, but Raja tried to explain that they were simply passing though. The mirrors weren't convinced, and accused her of trespassing. Raja didn't know what to do. So she did what most would do with instinct.

She ran.

Delana was brushed by her tail and dashed after her mother. Flight was not an option, Delana wouldn't be able to keep up, and there was certainly no time for her to climb onto Raja's back. LeafWing and NightSky griped onto Raja's shoulder blades. The mirrors weren't far behind, their angry roars seemed to bite at her tail. Delana wasn't keeping up and soon, Raja lost her. She looked back one moment, Delana was there, and the next, she wasn't. Raja's heart was thumping faster now, but she kept a plain face.

The mirrors were gone too, so she brought the other two to a short overhang, nudging them underneath, and burst off in a furious search for Delana. No luck. The mirrors' dusty prints soon blew away, gone. And so was Delana.

She won't let them out of her sight. As long as they stayed on her back, they were going to be safe. Right? That's what Raja kept telling herself as she continued their journey to the Starfall Isles.

Night and Leaf were quiet the rest of the trip.

-

Their journey had been a one of loss and lessons. They finally reached the Starfall Isles, where they were welcomed with open arms. Raja made friends, so did her children. She raised them strictly, hoping to avoid losing them just as she lost Delana.

-

Vine returned later, joining the growing clan. Raja had moved on, her children and her clan were her only responsibilities. She needed no mate to further add on to the list.
