Ruthless Cunning Passionate
The Black Wolf The Beast Clan tell stories about a dragon known as The Black Wolf, a dragon devoid of compassion. No beast is safe when The Black Wolf prowls the land.

The last hatchling to be born of a cursed clan, Onyx was a survivor. He broke from his egg alone, with no family; the only living thing in nest surrounded by his fallen clan. He screeched for his mother as his newly opened red eyes took in a gloomy cave that smelled of death. He stumbled over the rotten bones of long dead dragons and beasts. His cries continued as he unknowingly stepped over his mother's skull. The tiny hatchling wandered out of the cave and into the light of the Scarred Wasteland. He cried and screeched and fluttered his tiny wings not understanding why no one was there to answer. He was hungry, cold, and alone in a world too big. His cries attracted a hunter from another clan. The hunter, a Wildclaw, said nothing as he scooped up the small hatchling and carried him off back to his clan.

Screeching and fighting, the hatchling was presented to the clan's leader. As the Wildclaw moved to place the hatchling on the ground, Onyx bit him. The leader Witherfang, a large Imperial, laughed at the newborn's audacity. He chose to keep the hatchling and raise it as a warrior for his clan. Witherfang gave the thistle hatching the name Onyx, for the dark stone he resembled. He placed Onyx in the care of Realia, a female mirror, that had been taken from another clan. She was a quiet reserved dragon, now in charge of raising hatchlings that like her, came from other clans. She lavished the young hatchlings with love. Onyx began to see her as his mother. His early days were filled with song and kindness. He was told of the gods and that when dragons leave this world, they are sent to serve them. Onyx began to grow under his new mother's love and began his training with his brothers and sisters. At first it was fun, a new game to see which hatchling was the strongest but soon that would change.

Witherfang came to Realia one day and asked her to line up the young dragons. Onyx and his siblings did as they were told. They were still young but the hatchlings all feared Witherfang enough to follow orders. The old Imperial walked up and down the line of hatchlings glaring into their big innocent eyes. As he inspected them, a small group of dragons took Realia away as her job was done. Witherfang separated the hatchlings into groups and their real training began. The days passed and training was no longer fun. He trained them for battle, having them spar with each other. As they spared, the young dragons were moved from group to group. The winner of a fight was moved into a group with stronger dragons; the loser into a group with weaker dragons. The stronger of the young dragons received praise and larger rations, while the weaker were pushed in an attempt to make them stronger. Onyx was younger than most of the hatchlings and fought hard to keep up with the older, stronger dragons. He wanted to prove himself, wanted to show Witherfang he was grateful for his life. He began to resent the stronger dragons, and slowly the kindness and compassion he had once known twisted into malice and disdain. He stopped seeing the others as his siblings and only saw rivals. His fights became bloody as he learned to outmaneuver and cripple his opponents. Witherfang watched his progress with glee for he knew that Onyx would be a fine warrior indeed. Then the day came when the unthinkable happened. The Beast Clan attacked.

Onyx and the other young warriors were called into battle, none of them fully grown, but all primed for the kill. Harpies dropped from the skies onto the backs of dragons, their spears crippling wings and piercing scales. Centaurs charged across the Scared Wasteland, packs of wolves at their side. The battle blurred around Onyx; feather, fur, skin, and blood swam in his vision. Roars and cries deafened his ears. The smell of death, and fire flooded his nostrils. The rage of battle took him then. He charged on barely aware of his surroundings, lashing out at all around him. When the rage faded, he stood covered in blood, snarling, and shaking from exhaustion. The battle was over, they had won, or so he thought. He looked around, and for the first time, took in the horror of the attack. Witherfang lay dead with a Harpy's spear through his chest. Most of the clan had fallen with him. The Beasts had broken through the lair's defenses, the nests and females were gone. What remained of the clan were a few warriors, most badly wounded soon to meet the gods. The clan was finished and with nothing left, the survivors scattered to the winds.

Death is nothing,
but to live defeated
and inglorious
is to die daily.

Know thy self,
know thy enemy.
A thousand battles,
a thousand victories.

There is a savage beast
in every man, and when
you hand that man a
sword or spear and send
him forth to war,
the beast stirs.

The broken warrior would have little choice but to leave his only home behind. Witherfang had taught him to be strong, to keep going in the face of opposition, but right now the only thing keeping the young dragon going was rage. The beast clan would pay for this, Onyx would see to it. Before he left, he found an injured black wolf laying at the edge of the battle field. The beast it seemed, had had a strange turn of luck. It had been trampled by a centaur. The wolf would have survived its injury, but Onyx made sure the beast would not see another sunrise. He took its skin as a cloak, and became the Black Wolf. A dragon who would be known as the beast clan's bane. He had a mission now and one that needed no clan: he would see an end to the Beast Clan, for they had taken everything from him. For now he would wander, and seek out the dens of beast.

The night sky glimmered above the ruthless warrior. It was a night of starfall, when the heavens glimmered with the light of shooting stars skating across the atmosphere. Onyx found himself resting with his face upturned to the sky. Years had passed since his clan had fallen. Onyx had grown older and more savage over that time. He had killed many beasts, and had even saved a few clans from the fate his had suffered. Onyx was a hero to the dragons he had met, and had even been asked to join many a clan. Offers that he turned down; his journey was not complete.

A flash caught his eye, breaking him from his thoughts. A shooting star had come too close, it burned though the sky as it fell to the earth. Onyx watched it plummet behind a stand of trees only a few miles away. The ground beneath him shook as the star hit the ground. The shock wave caused the veteran warrior to leap to his feet, his eyes staring off into the direction of the fallen star. A story came to his mind, an Arcane dragon once told him of an unbreakable sword made from the heart of a fallen star. A sword like that would surely aid him in destroying the Beast Clan! So Onyx set off to find the fallen star.

He flew like a shadow over the land. Once he was close enough, the star's path was easy to track. A trail of destruction had been left in its wake, the woods around it blazed with fire and a trench had been cut through the earth leading to the star's resting place. It was not long before Onyx stood on the edge of a crater looking down at a dark sparkling stone. Or at least he believed it was a stone, until it moved. Wings that sparkled like the night sky pulled back revealing a dragon. She was a beautiful nocturne, the colors of night and starlight. As she raised her head, her pale eyes flashed a multitude of hues. Then she suddenly panicked.

The dragon thrashed in the crater, not seeming to know how to control her limbs. She turned her face toward the sky, the shooting stars above glistening across her irises. Tears formed as she shrieked desperately toward the shooting stars. She scrambled awkwardly up to the edge of the crater and stood reaching toward the sky, with her starlight wings outstretched. Her calls were shrill sounds and desperate barks that even seemed to startle her. Her wings flapped like a hatchling's that had yet to figure out flight. She stumbled and used the rocks around her to move herself closer to the sky still screeching. Her calls resonated within Onyx, a reminder of a time long ago when he had called out to those who could not answer. The imperial moved toward the fallen star that had become a dragon and wrapped her in his wings. Onyx's word were soft, soothing, unusual to be coming from him. He quelled her cries, and held her close through the night. He would protect her, something inside told him he had to protect her.

Nebula, a name Onyx had chosen for his fallen star, was more of a handful than he had anticipated. She was as new to this world as fresh spring grass, and curious about everything. She could not speak any of the dragon languages at first, and had to learn by exposure. Onyx felt a sense of pride when her first word was his name. As they traveled, Onyx watched his little star learn. He grew fond of her, Nebula being the only dragon to see kindness and love come from the warrior. He knew however, that she was not truly happy and wanted to return to her place among the stars. So it was that Onyx sought the aid of the gods to help Nebula. The first thing he needed to do was find a servant of a god. Something that proved trickier then he had expected. That is until he found a Pearlcatcher that helped prepare dragons who had been chosen to serve Shadowbinder.

Devyn, had found his way to the Tangled Wood and had been saved by Shadowbinder. The great goddess had given him a task to pay for his life. He would prepare those who were destined to serve Shadowbinder through exaltion. He lived amid a clan that held the great shadow goddess's favor, and although the clan leader Iceblood had not stomach for exaltion, Devyn saw the work done. When the Pearlcatcher was approached by Onyx with an appeal to Shadowbinder, he was eager to help. To Onyx's joy, he even took the petition to the goddess herself. However, there was little Shadowbinder could do, she ruled over the shadows not the night sky and none of the other deities ruled the universe beyond their planet. Nebula was now part of this world and here she would stay.

Onyx made the decision to stay in the clan with Devyn. If his little star would be bound to this world she would need a family, something he alone could not provide. So the warrior took his place beside Devyn in service of Shadowbinder. The exalted ones had to first prove themselves in battle with the beasts of the land. Devyn would take them to the lairs of the beasts and for Onyx, this was an opportunity to hit the enemy in their homes. The imperial found he had a skill for the work, he trained the exalted ones to stand and fight, he taught them to lay in wait for their prey, and at the end of their training he helped them to face the shadows that called to them.

Devyn and Onyx had grown close over their work. The Pearlcatcher calling on his companion for more than just his skill in battle. The two became lovers before a year had even passed. Where Nebula brought out the kindness in the Imperial, Devyn brought out the passion. Any beast who landed a blow on Devyn's pearly hide would suffer the wrath of the Black Wolf.

Nebula had grown over the time in the clan as well. She took many mates over the first year, and bore many children. However she could never leave Onyx and would join him and Devyn in battle. It was after one such battle that she found her way into a relationship with both male dragons. The three of them forming a bond that would never be broken. Together they fought, they loved, and they lived in the shadows of the Tangled Wood.

A sword forged from the heart of a star, the words that had led Onyx to Nebula. He knew what those words truly meant now. It was the love for Nebula that had bound the three of them together, and had forged them into Shadowbinder's sword. The Black Wolf, the Fallen Star, and The Shadow's Servant.
